The OpsMgr 2012 Sizing Helper is an interactive document designed to assist you with planning & sizing deployments of System Center 2012 Operations Manager. It helps you plan the correct amount of infrastructure needed for a new OpsMgr 2012 deployment, removing the uncertainties in making IT hardware purchases and optimizes cost. A typical recommendation will include minimum hardware specification for each server role, topology diagram and storage requirement.

Some Best Practices for OpsMgr 2012
For all server roles (management server, databases, gateway server), we recommend storage controller with battery-backed write cache enabled (256 MB minimum recommended).
SQL Temp DB
For large scale environment (>1000 Agents), we require a SQL Temp DB with 8GB data and 2GB log.
For large scale environment (>1000 Agents), we highly recommend a high performance SQL Temp DB.

The recommended configurations include one additional server as a failover server for each scenario.
Additional servers are recommended for high availability when more than one server goes offline.
The failover server should use the hardware specification of the management server that manages the highest number of agents.
Create resource pool dedicated to network monitoring.
Add dedicated management servers to newly created resource pool.
Remove dedicated management server from any other resource pool. Ex. The "All Management Servers Pool"
All Operations Manager 2012 server roles can be virtualized with Hyper-V as long as the virtual machines are configured with the recommended hardware.
