Windows XP Service Pack 3 published to WSUS

Hi everyone,

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) was made available to Windows Server Update Services this morning, classified as a service pack.  It includes previously released updates and hotfixes to Windows XP and creates a new baseline for servicing.  For more information about what’s changed and how to deploy, see the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview.

One thing you may be aware of, if you happen to be managing any clients running Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, is an incompatibility Microsoft Dynamics RMS has with Windows XP SP3.  To address the problem, we’ve added a filter to help prevent Windows XP SP3 from being installed on clients managed by WSUS and will make a fix available soon (more info here).

We use a custom msgina.dll on our systems to display a company logo. Is it possible to integrate this into the WSUS SP3 deploy so that it does not get replaced after the SP3 upgrade? Basically we just need to replace one file in the upgrade with another…

  15. sachin says:

WSUS not yet detected Win XP SP 3, what could be wrong?

  16. Roy says:

Like a couple others I got service pack 3 but the license terms fail to download.  Has anyone figured out a way around this.  I tired the wsusutil.exe reset but it did not help.

  17. Scott G says:

I was able to successfully approve XP SP3, but it is failing to install on my test clients – I am not finding any events to indicate why on either my update system or the client systems

  18. Larry M says:

XP SP3 installed on several computers just fine and on others the update failed.  The event logs of these computers do not provide any meaningful information.  I’ve noticed several other updates that I was less concerned about in WSUS that failed recently (such as SQL 2005 updates).  We just recently upgraded to WSUS 3.0.  Any ideas?

  19. Tom Steger says:

SP3 appears to deploy to clients OK but after the update

the status for SP3 reported back to WSUS is "Not Applicable" and the last event is:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929)

Event reported at 5/8/2008 4:25 AM:

Installation successful and restart required for the following update:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929).

This is the same even after several restarts.

I posted this to microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services and it appears others are experiencing the same issue.

I got the same results on 5 other machines with different configurations.

  20. Pete Phillips says:

    A little assistance?.

WSUS is "download"ing SP XP3 to clients but is not scheduling the install. The yellow shield is on the machines but this is a manualy thing from the users to install. I want SP3 to be a completely automated install.

    Can this be done?.

    Cheers

  21. T Tulloch says:

.NET 3.0 Framework detection issues after XP SP3. It seems that WSUS doesn’t push down .NET 3.0 after XP SP3.

  22. Chris S says:

Did anybody answer Peter Phillips question of June 2 about SP3 downloading to users’ machines but not installing without users manually clicking the yellow shield and choosing to install SP3?  I am also seeing this behavior and would like to know if a resolution exists before releasing the service pack to all my users.

    Thank you.

  23. Chris S says:

In regard to Peter Phillips and my previous comments about users being forced to manually initiate the SP3 installation, I discovered my mistake in the following:  I approved the update for installation yesterday morning and expected it to have installed by the end of the day.  However, my policy "Automatic Update detection frequency" was set to 22 hours, so my clients did not even begin downloading it until this morning.  With my Configure Automatic Updates policy set to "Auto download and schedule the install" at 1pm, I now see my clients installing the service pack automatically.

    Hope this helps others.

THanks for the replies regarding my issue.. However it’s been a number of weeks since XP SP3 was enabled for download / install. And only those clients that have clicked on the yellow shield have installed SP3. All the others are set in a "downloaded" state but no install scheduled.

    Help?.

  32. Anthony says:

Not sure if anyone is still having issues deploying XP SP3 via WSUS but I got around the problem of a download failure by adjusting the Anti-Virus scanning paramaters.

During the install process on the client, SP3 was downloaded to C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload and then unpacked.  The unpacking process failed because of anti-virus scanning.   I modified the anti-virus to exclude this folder from monitoring and the process worked and SP3 was installed.

I’m using CA eTrust Antivirus 7.1.501.  Hope this helps someone.

  34. Jonathan says:

We were having the same problem and I can verify what Anthony said above about excluding the C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload location from being scanned with anti-virus software.

We use Symantec Anti-Virus – now called "Endpoint Protection Manager" in our environment, and once i excluded this path from being scanned with auto-protect, everything started pushing again. Thanks for that one Anthony!

So – did anyone have an issue like us where SP3 was deployed by WSUS and it wasn’t approved????

Our whole org has had this deployed without our approval which has upset many of our users. We didn’t even get time to test it before deployment!

Windows is designed to not install service packs without user intervention. It only installes hotfixes/security patches.

Service packs have to be installed by someone clicking on the yellow shield ans walking through the prompts. I guess this behaviour is by design.
