WSUS 3.0 SP1 is now RTM!!!

Dear WSUS users,

I am very excited to announce the release of WSUS 3.0 SP1, now live and ready for download! This is a significant release that represents a huge milestone for all involved and we thank you greatly for your feedback and support throughout the life cycle of this project.

WSUS 3.0 SP1 can be installed stand-alone or as an in place upgrade to WSUS 2.0 SP1 or WSUS 3.0 RTM.

The improvements that SP1 offers compared to WSUS 3.0 RTM include:

·  Support for Windows Server 2008

·  Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2008

·  Enhanced bulk approval capability, preserving existing approvals

·  Support for separate proxy servers and ports for SSL and non SSL traffic

·  Better performance

·  Detailed computer reports that can be imported to Excel

For those of you who are still on WSUS 2.0, a description of the new features in WSUS 3.0 RTM is quite long and can be found in the overview guide.

WSUS 3.0 SP1 is now located at the Microsoft Download Center. It will also be released via Microsoft Update, the Catalog, and WSUS in late March. To download and to obtain installation instructions, please visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F87B4C5E-4161-48AF-9FF8-A96993C688DF&displaylang=en

Congratulations team and WSUS community on this great milestone, enjoy!

To be honest I am not sure if this is the best way to pose these questions so please forgive my ignorance in advance.

How can I control where the automatic updates are downloaded to?

It appears that they seem to create a temporary folder on the volume with the largest amount of available capacity.

Some of my volumes are special purpose and I do not want the update files even if they are temporary to be created there.

Is there a chance that the update files will actually have  the temporary attributes set so that we can identify them as temporary files in the first place?

If I tighten the security the update process fails the install with an erro code 0x05.

Is there any way I can exclude a volume or volumes from being eligible to be used by the update process?

Thank you for your kind attention.

I’ve upgraded our primary WSUS server and when I open the OPtions, it has a banner at the bottom stating that it is still processing a configuration change.   Does the system require a post-installation reboot?

  23. WSUS user says:

If the SMTP password is long (>= 12 chars), then the upgrade could fail with the above issue.

A work-around is to set the SMTP password to be something smaller temporarily, do the upgrade and set to the correct password after upgrade.

    Hi,

I applied SP1 yesterday and seemed to go just fine, thank you.

When will we be able to do automatic approvals based on some more variables? I’d like to be able to auto-appove something like the Malicious Software Removal tool or Root Certificates, but to do that I have to (unless I missed something) allow the entire category of updates it falls under to be auto-approved.

    Thank you.

    Mayday, Mayday!!

Cecilia, we need help!!  We just upgraded to WSUS 3.0 SP1 and now we have numerous clients coming to a halt (CPU utilization is pegged at 100%).  This started a day after we upgraded from 2.0 SP1 enterprise wide.  We had to disable the wuauserv system service on all our devices so that we wouldn’t have thousands of clients reporting problems.  We are very close to callilng premiere support, but since this is WSUS related, I thought posting here would be prudent.  Please advise.

    2 Problems installing WSUS 3.0 SP1 on W2k3 Server Enterprise SP2

    1.  I too received the SMTP error:

Failed to set SMTP_USERPASSWD property from SmtpUserPassword registry value (Error 0x800700EA: More data is available.)

There is a nice tutorial on how to fix this here:

    http://abc-solutions.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!F616727CACD12943!477.entry

    2.  After that, I received this message:

ExecuteQuery: Failed to execute SQL query BACKUP DATABASE SUSDB to DISK=N’D:WSUSSUSDB.bak’ (Error 0x80040E14)

I fixed that by granting the Everyone group full permissions to the D: drive (after the upgrade I removed the Everyone group).

Maybe a little better Q&A next time…  Also – when are you going to get a TechNet forum??

Just a quick heads-up for anyone installing WSUS 3.0 sp1 on a clean build of Windows Server 2008 with only the IIS7 role enabled.

The install of WSUS 3.0 sp1 will fail because it tries to configure dynamic content compression which is NOT installed as a role service for IIS7 by default.  Install the dynamic content compression role service for IIS7 and all should be well.

    Is it fail ?

  61. I want to download security patches for Windows Server 2K and Windows Server 2003.

Can I use WSUS 3.1 to donwload them and push them to the Servers ?

Where can I find the patches for download ?

Just installed sp1 on a 3.0 WSUS. Worked well. After doing initial config in options, all is working as before. All settings preserved during upgrade.

  63. The Chump says:

Upgraded a Win2k3 R2 server (fully patched) running WSUS 3.0 perfectly to the SP1 and it bombed.  Lost all WSUS functionality.

Gonna restore the box to last nights backup and put this on the self.

    Error  ->

InstallWsus: MWUS Installation Failed (Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation.)

Thank you.

I have a WSUS 3.0 installation using remote SQL.  I understand this is a "manual" upgrade process (MS makes the same statment on their site).  However

I’m after the release notes / fixes that Microsoft provide with any other product’s service pack.

Where can we view a list of fixes / updates in SP1?  The release notes on the SP1 download page point to a generic V3.0 page..

This update is junk. Do us all a favor and rip this trouble down from the Microsoft site and put it back only when it actually works.

On the bright side, I’ve earned almost $20K alone attempting to fix this issue, only to be forced to reinstall WSUS from scratch.

On the not so bright side, the management who hired me is now looking at 3rd party tools to replace WSUS as they were already insecure to begin with and adding in this problem……………………

In other words, GET YOUR STUFF TOGETHER MICROSOFT!!!!

  80. Jeff25 says:

My backup would not complete with this same error:

ExecuteQuery: Failed to execute SQL query BACKUP DATABASE SUSDB to DISK=N’D:WSUSSUSDB.bak’ (Error 0x80040E14)

but the issue was not permissions.  Disk quotas was turned on and Network Service was limited to 3gb.  The WSUS database was over 5gb so it always ran out of space.

    So check your quota settings.

  81. araç sorgulama says:

Not exactly thrilled with the install.  Before I can run the install it checks for a gig of free space on the C drive.  I’m not even going to install this update there, but it still checks.

If I’m lucky I’ll have space cleared for the update today.
