Alerts and Notifications

Hope everyone is finding the Windows Intune Beta service useful and a productivity booster. I wanted to share with you a few helpful tips and tricks when using the Alerting feature set to monitor your desktop computers and help you keep track of any issues that require your attention. Here are the steps to using the features that can help you stay on top of issues and be proactive in your environment.


The first step is setting up e-mail notifications. This feature allows you to be informed via e-mail whenever alerts occur in your environment, and allows you to configure which alerts you will receive. To set up e-mail notifications, you need to add an e-mail recipient. You can do so by going to the ‘Administration’ tab in the left hand navigation pane of the Administration Console (it’s the tool box icon), and expanding the Alerts and Notifications node, and then selecting ‘Recipients’.


If you would like to add an e-mail recipient who does not have administrator privileges (i.e. they cannot log on to the service), use the ‘add’ button in the recipients page. Otherwise, you can select one of the existing Windows Intune administrators (if you have added any previously).  You may choose to recieve e-mails in one of the 10 different languages that is available. You may also choose to create recipients that have the same e-mail address but different languages.


The next step is to choose which alerts you want to be notified of via email. You may select to receive e-mails from All Alerts, Critical alerts, Informational Alerts, Warning Alerts, or Remote Assistance Alerts. This can be done in the ‘Notifications Rules’ node under the ‘Administration’ workspace. You can select which recipients will receive a particular category of alerts (Hint: If you add a recipient to ‘All Alerts’, make sure they are not added to other categories of alerts so that they don’t receive multiple emails about the same issue).


Finally, you can configure which issues you would like to see alerts for. You can do this by going to the ‘Alert Types’ node and choosing which alert types you are interested in from the list. You can also enable or disable alert types from this view. This can help you enable alerts that are important for you in your environment and disable alerts that you do not wish to see.
