This is a long time in the making! We're proud to finally interview Visakh!

Let's get to the interview!

==================

1. Who are you, where are you, and what do you do? What are your specialty technologies?

I'm Visakh Murukesan. I'm of Indian origin, born and brought up in a city called Thiruvananthapuram which is the capital of Kerala state in India. I'm 33 years old. I'm happily married and have a 3 year old daughter.

I'm currently working as a Senior BI Consultant in a company called Middle East Internet Group in Dubai. I've more than 11 years experience in designing and implementing database and BI projects using Microsoft's SQLServer database system and using BI tools like Integration Services, Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Data Quality Services. I also have working experience in self service  BI tools like Power Pivot, Power View etc. I also occasionally work on VB and VB .NET projects as well. My current job role involves end to end implementation of BI projects for various companies across Middle East which are under our group.

2. What are your big projects right now?

Currently I'm working on a BI project for the consolidation of accounting data at the group level for my company. This is for the purpose of auditing as well as for doing multitude of extrapolations and projections to analyze the business growth and take strategic decisions based on them. Its a very challenging project as it involves integration of lots of complex accounting systems.

In addition I'm also working on few personal blogs as well as on a TechNet Wiki article which I would be publishing shortly

3. What is TechNet Wiki for? Who is it for?

TechNet Wiki is for anyone who loves to collaborate, share and learn technology. Its one of the best platforms that Microsoft has provided which enables people from across the world to participate, collaborate with each other  to integrate their knowledge and share it for the benefit of the community.

TechNet Wiki platform benefits both the classes of people i.e. people who would like to learn new aspects of technology as well as people who are experts in a fields and who would like to share their expertise globally for helping others. So in effect TechNet Wiki is for everyone who would be like to be abreast with the latest technologies.

4. What do you do with TechNet Wiki, and how does that fit into the rest of your job?

Initially I started off as a follower of various TechNet Wiki articles which helped me to improve my knowledge on SQLServer. Once I had the confidence that I have attained enough knowledge to start helping other people, I started writing articles based on various problem scenarios and cool features I came across. Once I started receiving lots of positive feedback from readers as well as from TechNet Wiki in the form of medals it really motivated me to contribute more and more to TechNet Wiki

5. What is it about TechNet Wiki that interests you?

The collaborative nature of Wiki is the main thing that interests me. This has enabled multiple people to integrate their knowledge in the platform to create highly informative quality articles. There are also lots of reviewers who volunteer good amount to time in formatting and tweaking articles to give it very professional look. The awards and recognition also helps in motivating the people who are voluntarily spending lot of their time for the community

6. On what Wiki articles do you spend most of your time?

I spend my time mostly on SQL Server database related articles as well as on Business Intelligence technology like Integration Services, Reporting Services related articles.

7. What are your top 5 favorite Wiki articles?

My Top 5 favourite articles are:

Simulating NOT IN and NOT LIKE Functionality In SSRS Filter Expressions

SQLServer Tips: How To Make a Table Read Only in Database

SQL: Full Outer Join The Most Generic Join Statement

Rowset Concatenation Using Native SSRS Expressions

Import a SSIS Project From Catalog Using T-SQL Script

All of the above articles have won me Gold medals in the Technet Wiki Guru competition.

8. What could we do differently on TechNet Wiki?

One thing we can do is to create review groups within TechNet Wiki corresponding to each of the article sections (like for example group for Transact SQL, group for SQLBI and Power BI articles etc). This will ensure review of the article would be more effective as only people with appropriate technology skill level would be part of the sections review group. This will improve the quality of TechNet Article and would make review mechanism more efficient. The same group can also be used for screening the articles for TechNet Wiki competitions.

9. Who has impressed you in the Wiki community, and why?

There are lots of people who write quality articles in Wiki so its quite difficult to pick a few.

The first person who really motivated me to start writing in wiki was Satya. Other members who has always helped me with quality feedback for my articles are Ronen a.k.a Pituach and Shashank Singh a.k.a Shanky.

Nice to see you here Visakh! I couldn’t meet you in Tehran just 6 months ago! 😉 But, my special thanks go to Ed because you are here! 🙂 Congrats Vishak! 🙂

  10. Saeid Hasani says:

Wow, I cannot edit my former comment, I see a typo there! I meant Visakh not Vishak! Sorry my friend!

Ed, we need the ability to edit our comments here!

  11. Shanky_621 says:

A great interview of a great person. Visakh joined Forums long after I joined and now he almost has same points as I have , so you can guess how accurate his answers are. Needless to mention he has great TSQL skill.

    Regarding point
    >>One thing we can do is to create review groups within TechNet Wiki corresponding to each of the article sections
I whole heartedly support this point. There are lot of articles which are trivial one, adding nothing to Wiki. IIRC the whole purpose of wiki was to create articles which are unique , the uniqueness is missing now. And IMHO if a group is formed we can bring
    back the charm.

  12. pituach says:

Great interview! This interview had to be done months ago. How did we missed him?!?

I think that all of us familiar with Visakh and his great contribution in the forums!

    Congrats Visakh 🙂

  13. FLauffer says:

Nice post to recognize someone who helps in the community!

  14. Saeid, I actually signed up this blog (all the Wiki blogs) to migrate to the new blogging platform on TechNet/MSDN, so once that’s complete, we’ll finally be able to edit comments!

  15. Pituach: "Great interview! This interview had to be done months ago. How did we missed him?!?"

Well, actually, this was my second round of listing him in a list of folks we should interview.

    1:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjas/archive/2015/11/23/interview-with-a-wiki-ninja-who-should-we-interview.aspx

    2:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjas/archive/2016/02/08/interview-with-a-wiki-ninja-who-should-we-interview-next.aspx

And as it turns out, he sent me the answers a long time before, so I missed it! Needless to say, we’ve both been working on it for a few months. =^)

  16. Saeid Hasani says:

    Ed, cool news! Thanks! 🙂
