TechNet Wiki International Summit – What would it be like?

Durval recently joined the TechNet Wiki Community Council and will help us plan out the TechNet Wiki International Summit.

What would the summit be like?

What would the topics of the sessions be?

How many days would it take place on?

In what week should it take place?

Also, Craig made some Wiki T-Shirts and flyers for SPC. If we have a few physical locations (like maybe one in Redmond, one in Brazil, and one in Turkey), we can have a few things like T-Shirts, flyers, stickers, and the TechNet Wiki magazines that Durval mentions below. Do you have any specific thoughts about swag? What should we have? How do we make it happen?

Let's brainstorm! Let's give Durval some ideas!

Here is our update (still being added to) of our different ideas of what it might be like…

From Durval's interview (Interview with a Wiki Ninja and the Translation Challenge Winner – Durval Ramos):

  • It could be an event to honor the principal authors of our TechNet Wiki and their Technologies, with these articles in a little "magazine" for all participants of the event.
  • Some authors could show in practice how they created a solution that made it possible to write a winning article on TechNet Guru.
  • Discussions with older contributors in the TechNet Wiki on the evolution of Technological solutions in collaboration with use of the Wiki (Network Articles), including a time of questions and answers ("open mic") for event participants.
  • The experience of some MVPs sharing information via TechNet Wiki.
  • The evolution of the TechNet Wiki as an alternative Solution Repository and expansion of knowledge in the Community.
  • The effect of social networks (Twitter, Facebook and others) disseminating information from TechNet Wiki.
  • Templates articles for various subjects and content (Forum solutions, settings, software development "step-by-step", etc.)

Thanks!

    Thanks Ed!
I’m currently formulating these principles to present to the Community Council. In my last interview I presented some ideas. If anyone can provide more content will help us a lot !!!

  2. Shanky_621 says:

Thanks Ed,Durval for bringing this idea forward,I am totally in favour that such meets should happen I pointed out and requested to Ed for this in my interview. Regarding SQL server/other technologies topics should be
1.Advancements in SQL server 2012 bug fixes and new findings.
2.I would like judges ( All technet guru judges) to host this event and should give a starting speech to it. May be we can choose one from each technology.
3.How to increase reach of technet wiki to readers of the world. How to make it more interactive.
4.I guess its hard for every people to join, so video conferencing or Lync can be used .To whosoever want to view this a link must be shared.
5.Judges and users sharing there recent experience in SQL server/sharepoint/Dynamics/SSIS/reporting and other fields.
6.Wiki ninjas presenting articles which they think would be helpful to lot of users.
7.A thank to all who presented there article and made change to Technet wiki.
8Discusiion about plagiarism and how to make quality better.
    9. Issues currently going with Wiki and how to address them

Did i miss anything, or it were just lame options ?

  3. XAML guy says:

I think you’ve listed some great ideas there Durval
I’m happy to help contact the various WIki groups, and beg for contributors if you need.
May need separate sessions for different time zones
May have to be weekends/evenings to fit around everyone’s life commitments

  4. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Thanks, Durval. I’ll add those ideas to this blog post.

  5. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Actually each idea is worth a conversation about it.

From Durval’s interview: “It could be an event to honor the principal authors of our TechNet Wiki and their Technologies, with these articles in a little “magazine” for all participants of the event.”

Would the event be virtual, like from Lync? It could be possible to do it in a few simultaneous locations (we could have some meeting rooms on Microsoft’s campus) in addition to the Lync connections.

  6. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Durval: “Some authors could show in practice how they created a solution that made it possible to write a winning article on TechNet Guru.”

This would be good, to have TechNet Guru winners describe their process in writing winning articles. I could picture it being a session with a few different Guru winners presenting their tips and tricks.

  7. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Durval: "The effect of social networks (Twitter, Facebook and others) disseminating information from TechNet Wiki."

One thing I’m very passionate about is using Social Synergy with TechNet Wiki articles. We have a series of blog posts about that:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjas/archive/tags/social+synergy/default.aspx

So I’d love to lead a session about that and have a few co-speakers involved.

  8. Ed Price - MSFT says:

    Shanky,

Yes, thank you! It was Shanky’s idea first to do an International Summit (one big multi-day event on Lync).

Shanky, could you please collaborate with Durval on this? Could you add me as a contact in Skype? My account name is “edwardnprice”. Thank you!

  9. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Shanky: “2. I would like judges ( All technet guru judges) to host this event and should give a starting speech to it. May be we can choose one from each technology.”

    Well, we can certainly ask!

  10. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Shanky: “3. How to increase reach of TechNet Wiki to readers of the world. How to make it more interactive.”

Good! A brainstorm session? Where everyone discusses ideas? It would be good to have people try to bring at least one idea of what they would want to do.

  11. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Shanky: “4. I guess its hard for every people to join, so video conferencing or Lync can be used .To whosoever want to view this a link must be shared.”

Yes, this won’t be a problem. We could also have a few locations around the world where people could meet.

  12. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Shanky: “8. Discussion about plagiarism and how to make quality better.”

We definitely have a few people who are experts in this… Peter Geelen, Carsten, Naomi, Richard, etc.

  13. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Shanky: “Did i miss anything, or it were just lame options ?”

None of it was lame! Great ideas!

Also, Craig made some Wiki T-Shirts and flyers for SPC. If we have a few physical locations (like maybe one in Redmond, one in Brazil, and one in Turkey), we can have a few things like T-Shirts, flyers, stickers, and the TechNet Wiki magazines that Durval mentioned.

Any thoughts about swag? I’ll add it to the post at the top as well.

  14. Saeid Hasani says:

Great! I will share this post in our FB SQL Group, I hope it will help having more ideas!

  15. Shanky_621 says:

    Ed,
Thankyou very much for considering the ideas, have added you in Skype you just need to accept the request.I will mail to Durval.
    Saeid nice idea there

  16. Davut EREN - TAT says:

    Thank you Ed. Great share

  17. pituach says:

    The idea sounds very interesting!

Unfortunately I do not see myself coming to the U.S. for a 2 hours event (off-topic, in fact I haven’t yet been in America the continent, despite the fact that I have been in almost every other region in the world).

Regional event, it is a great idea, in case there are enough participants in each region. Big event beyond a nice bar meeting, requires participants of at least 200 people I think. Is there that much WIKI’s contributors, in each region in the world? probably not.

    * In our region we have two people, I am from Israel and Saeid from Iran, let’s say that we want to make a region event πŸ™‚ will it be in Israel or in Iran πŸ™‚ ? Maybe I did not notice but I do not think that there is someone from Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, or Iraq. If there are enough people in our region then I am willing to help organize a regional event in Microsoft Israel πŸ™‚

Virtual event is the only option I see for mass participation. On the other hand, virtual event can not be compare to physical event, where people meet face to face, it allows to distribute some Wiki T-Shirts and flyers or any other gifts, etc. I really be happy if there was a physical event, and I vote for this option, If it was relevant for me.

** With all that being said, I think you should do it :-), I loved the ideas posted here!

  18. Alan Nascimento Carlos says:

I think a great idea! My suggestions:

Number of days: 02 than 03 days
Week: Month of May or June
Sessions and Themes: How would people with Durval commented the most voted posts demonstrating how configured or made the subject. One-hour sessions. Also call MVP and Microsoft Evangelists, and partners.
Open to the general public in my opinion to publicize the work of the Technet Wiki.

  20. Durval Ramos says:

    Shanky,
Thanks for the ideas, we certainly talk a lot about each item. At first I did not imagine valuing the judges, but we appreciate the TechNet Guru winners, e.g. you !

  21. Durval Ramos says:

    Great XAML guy,

Separate presentations in different “time zones” is fundamental to the success of our first Summit.
Many contributors want to participate in their favorite technologies and we want everyone around Summit in convenient times for those who will speak and also to anyone watching.

  22. Durval Ramos says:

    Ed,

Social Synergy in social networks and in the TechNet / MSDN Communities. This is an extremely important to value our Community.

We need to show up and be noticed by the world! Let’s create a hashtag to identify our Summit. Maybe #TNWikiSummit or #TechNetWikiSummit . Let’s think big! Who knows, we got the “Top Trends” in some countries, it only depends on us.

  23. Durval Ramos says:

    Thanks Saeid!
    Your sharing always helps ;^D

  24. Durval Ramos says:

    Pituach,

I believe that we have more than 2 hours of the content, but I understand you about all the trouble to attend an event in the USA (cost, free time, passport, visa and other subjects).

In events like this, we have a wide variety of people. So it’s likely to find other TechNet Wiki members and also likely other people that don’t know what we do in our Community.

If you really cannot travel, you rest assured that We intend to make live video stream and record the key moments of the Summit. We will try to consider the “time zone” for all participants “registered” for the event.

  25. Durval Ramos says:

    Alan,

The summer is a good time to Summit, but many want to participate and this requires time to plan the event participation, a trip, …

Anyway, are good ideas. Let’s think !

  26. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Shanky, I don’t see you in Skype for some reason. Could you ping me again? It’s edwardnprice. Thanks!

  27. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Durval and Pituach, I think it would mostly be a virtual (Lync) event, but we could have a few locations (Redmond, Brazil, Turkey) in case people are in town, so they can meet together.

  28. Shanky_621 says:

Ed I guess Edwardnprice is your skype name ,I found you and have sent you request my skype name is shanky_ec .Can you fin me ?

  29. Durval Ramos says:

Shanky, I sent to you an email with my user, when you can access the Skype let’s talk

  30. Ed Price - MSFT says:

Shanky, I still haven’t found your Skype request yet. I’ll search for your name. Thanks!

  31. Ed Price - MSFT says:

I didn’t see a Shanky_EC. Are you Shashank S? It’s the one that comes up at the top of my search. Thanks!

  32. Durval Ramos says:

Yes Ed, the user name is “Shashank Singh”. You can add this user

  33. hassan sayed issa20014 says:

    Congratulations!

  34. Durval Ramos says:

    Thanks Hassan!!!

  35. pituach says:

Durval, actually passport is not a problem for me πŸ™‚
As much as I understood i can go to US at any time, and even work in US for up to three month ( I have another citizenship, which give me this option), but the rest of og the limitation that mentioned are correct.
