Interview with a Wiki Ninja and the Translation Challenge Winner – Durval Ramos

Welcome to another Monday Interview with a Wiki Ninja!

Today we're going to interview our Translation Challenge Winner (see WINNERS of the 2013 TechNet Wiki Translation Challenge!!!)…

Durval Ramos!

You've been blogging for the Wiki Ninjas Brasil blog. How has that been going? What's it like to collaborate with the other Portuguese bloggers?

We are in a period of major makeover and change; many new contributors have come, and there are some cultural "myths" that we must tear down.

The dynamics in Wiki Ninjas Blog Brazil is different; many Community members are reading the Blog and creating or editing your articles.

It's like there's a caution to avoid unnecessary comments in an important location like our Blog.

What are some of your favorite blog posts on the Wiki Ninjas Brasil blog (from you and the other contributors)? Why are they are your favorite blog posts (for those of us who don't read Portuguese)?

Ed, I will mention a few other posts on Wiki Ninjas Blog Brazil that I don't display in my "Interview with Wiki Ninja" (http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjas/archive/2013/12/09/interview-with-wiki-ninja-durval-ramos.aspx) to introduce myself in the Community, and also some good ones from others.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjasbr/archive/2013/08/26/entrevista-com-o-wiki-ninja-rafael-mantovani.aspx . When I read the interview with Rafael, I was surprised because he's a different MVP, who likes to help but in your way, a simple and true member of the Brazilian Community.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjasbr/archive/2013/11/10/s-225-bado-atualiza-231-227-o-nacional-da-comunidade-1-186-semana-de-novembro-2013-com-os-maiores-contribuintes.aspx This post was one of the first I read in the Brazilian Blog about the growth of contributions for each Brazilian State(areas); it was created by Hezequias.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/wikininjasbr/archive/2014/01/21/ter-231-a-feira-artigo-spotlight-adfs-em-destaque-e-o-technet-wiki-day-2014.aspx This blog post was the first I created to promote the TechNet Wiki Day (the highest award for the Brazilian Community in the TechNet Wiki) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/pt-br/contents/articles/14147.technet-wiki-day.aspx

Recently you won the November 2013 through January 2014 TechNet Wiki Translation Challenge! What did you learn from that experience?

It may seem strange, but I did not expect and hadn't thought about winning the challenge; I just wanted to help my Community obtain one of the top places.

We are going through many changes; I knew we needed more useful information on the Wiki, Forums, and other resources available in the TechNet/MSDN portals.

At the same time, the Turkish Community was producing an incredible amount of articles and I was sure (based on some of the Turkish titles) it would be very fast growth of articles translated by the Turkish Community (but I was wrong).

Another curious case… I have translated articles some time ago, and I knew the principal translators of the TechNet Wiki Community.

I believe that everyone who is reading this interview already knows, but I want to once again honor these great members of our Community…

they are Benoit Jester (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/profile/benoit%20jester%20-%20mtfc/) and Carsten Siemens (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/profile/carsten%20siemens/).

In some moments I was looking for the articles that they translated to make my translations into Portuguese and other moments I realized that they followed my translations for also translating the same articles in their respective languages.

This "chase" occurred until mid-December and then I realized that my pace of translations articles was much larger in scale.

What were your favorite translations that you contributed?

I really liked translating two series of articles:

MSDN/TechNet Forums (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/tags/MSDN_2F00_TechNet+Forums/default.aspx), and;

Template Articles for Forums (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/tags/Template+Articles+for+Forums/default.aspx);

These series show the power of integrating information in our Wiki for all TechNet\MSDN. The TechNet/MSDN Forums series articles guides how to use the Forums and provides best practices for you to have a good performance with good tips in some complicated situations.

The "Template for Forums Articles" series shows how to adapt an excellent solution to the Forum as an article on TechNet Wiki.

Both collections of articles are very interesting. I recommend that if you can translate these articles to your language's Community, then why don't you translate them? This content is important and deserves to be shared.

How did you get started with TechNet Wiki? How did you learn about it?

I'm very curious; I read and clicked everything (or almost everything). In the case of the Brazilian TechNet Portal (http://technet.microsoft.com/pt-br/default.aspx), there exists a direct link in the same menu of the International TechNet Portal (en-us). I happened to read a good article about SQL Server, went looking for more content and did not find what I needed, and "at this time" I started to read all the articles in the series "core docs" to help to learn more information.

I also translated some articles from this series. In this time, I began to feel a part of the community, that TechNet Wiki is mine (yours and the whole Community's too).

Read more about the "core docs" series

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/tags/core+docs/default.aspx

I would like it if other IT professionals in other countries also found our TechNet Wiki as I found it… just by accessing and reading the TechNet Portal, simply through the menu. Following are some countries where I believe our TechNet Wiki would be successful, but they have no link in the menu:

– Spain (http://technet.microsoft.com/es-es/default.aspx)

– India (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/default.aspx)

– Netherlands (http://technet.microsoft.com/nl-nl/default.aspx)

– And "our" Portuguese brothers (http://technet.microsoft.com/pt-pt/default.aspx) with the Brazilian TechNet Wiki. Wouldn't it be great?

What were your first articles, and why did you start with those articles?

I started doing articles about SQL Server because I like to write them. I have great happiness in sharing information and helping people on the Forums, to see that I helped someone with a script, a tip, an article, or just a hyperlink to a White Paper.

Here are my first articles in Portuguese:

– SEQUENCES x IDENTITY. Qual utilizar? In English: SEQUENCES vs IDENTITY. What to use? (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/pt-br/contents/articles/20177.sequences-x-identity-qual-utilizar.aspx)

– Como funciona o Database Snapshot. In English: How Database Snapshot works. (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/pt-br/contents/articles/20804.como-funciona-o-database-snapshot.aspx)

– É difícil acabar com SQL Injection? In English: It's hard to end up with SQL Injection? (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/pt-br/contents/articles/20800.e-dificil-acabar-com-sql-injection.aspx)

It's funny, but reading these articles again I see that I have much content to add, and the Portuguese Community can help (This is the best feature on our TechNet Wiki, the Collaborative Work).

What would you like to see TechNet Wiki do in the future?

I would love to see an exclusive profile page for Wiki Ninjas based on belts, where the important thing would be to show what was done by each member of the Community.

It would be interesting also to have a smart search, grouping words and suggesting options. For example, when searching for SQL Server, on the left side of the TechNet Wiki Search, it would suggest sets of tags:

– SQL+Server\SharePoint

– SQL+Server\Report

– SQL+Server\Visual+Studio

If we did a TechNet Wiki Summit, what would it be like? What could some of the topics/sessions be?

I think that we have a lot of options to create a TechNet Wiki Summit.

– It could be an event to honor the principal authors of our TechNet Wiki and their Technologies, with these articles in a little "magazine" for all participants of the event.

– Some authors could show in practice how they created a solution that made it possible to write a winning article on TechNet Guru.

– Discussions with older contributors in the TechNet Wiki on the evolution of Technological solutions in collaboration with use of the Wiki (Network Articles), including a time of questions and answers ("open mic") for event participants.

– The experience of some MVPs sharing information via TechNet Wiki.

– The evolution of the TechNet Wiki as an alternative Solution Repository and expansion of knowledge in the Community.

– The effect of social networks (Twitter, Facebook and others) disseminating information from TechNet Wiki.

– Templates articles for various subjects and content (Forum solutions, settings, software development "step-by-step", etc.)

At this Summit, we can generate a great event with the amount of information that we produced in the TechNet Wiki.

Finally, since your profile avatar is Boba Fett, what do you think about the upcoming Star wars movies?

Well Ed, I'm a fan of Star Wars, so I'm eager to know how the footage will be initiated and what the movie will look like.

I just hope that Donald Duck will not participate in the history as a Sith Lord (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sith_Lord). =^S

Ha! Well, better Donald Duck than Jar Jar Binks becoming a Sith Lord! =^)

Please join me in thanking Durval for all his contributions on TechNet Wiki, the Wiki Ninjas Brasil blog, and in the Translation Challenge!

  24. Regarding the other language portals, I agree. Currently we’re trying to drum up some resources to get some bugs fixed, but the additional language portals are also high on the list.

Regarding Spanish, there seems to be a good community on the Wiki, but I’d like to get them integrated into other efforts we’re doing… to lead and organize the wiki community.

  25. Durval, I love your idea about suggesting tag combinations!

  26. Rossana Pombo says:

    – Durval, your activeness is amazing!

  27. Durval Ramos says:

Ed, I understand that you add our TechNet Wiki in other language portals involves more than good will, furthermore It’s important to control growth so that all new members have good working conditions.

Today the Spanish Community is large and can be difficult to organize, but we can add targets for inclusion of some Communities. Let’s plan to include from what we have! See, a link to the TechNet Wiki “pt-BR” for Portugal and a link TechNet Wiki “en-US” for India ;^D

    Well, just ideas.
