Interview with Hyper-V and PowerShell Wiki Ninja: Jan Egil Ring, MVP!

So I've been working on encouriging the Norwegian community to contribute even more to the TechNet Wiki. Not everyone needs this. Some People are born to share, and they do it great, I'd like to introduce another Norwegian that is doing a great job for the Hyper-V and PowerShell community in Norway (did I say he was an MVP?).

Meet Jan Egil Ring

Who are you, where are you, and what do you do? What are your specialty technologies?

My name is Jan Egil Ring and I live in Lørenskog, Norway. I work as a Lead Architect at Crayon, Norway focusing on Microsoft Infrastructure. I have a strong focus on automation, with Windows PowerShell being the technology I work most with.

What are your big projects right now?

I`m working a lot with the latest release of Windows Server, migrating Hyper-V environments to the new version as well as working with new features such as Work Folders.

I`m also looking more into configuration management, specifically the new Desired State Configuration (DSC) technology introduced in Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2. Service Management Automation (SMA) introduced as part of the Windows Azure Pack is also something that I`m trying to get more hands-on with.

What do you do with TechNet Wiki, and how does that fit into the rest of your job?

I use it for finding collections of link, overview of build numbers for different products as well as looking up many great articles. I use the Wiki as a tool for finding information in my job.

What is it about TechNet Wiki that interests you?

The fact that it`s created and updated by the community as well as Microsoft, which provides real world experiences not only from Microsoft but also from the people using the products.

On what articles have you collaborated with other community members on #TNWiki? What was that experience like?

I created the PowerShell V3 Featured Articles Wiki article, where it was great to see other community members add more valuable information.

On what Wiki articles do you spend most of your time?

Update lists for infrastructure components such as Hyper-V and Failover Clustering as well as everything PowerShell related.

What are your favorite Wiki articles you’ve contributed?

Without doubt theWindows PowerShell Survival Guide which have many useful resources for learning PowerShell such as blogs, books, videos and so on. When teaching PowerShell classes I always point my students to this TechNet Wiki article.

What are your top 5 favorite Wiki articles?

What could we do differently on TechNet Wiki?

Something to consider is doing virtual presentations via Lync for example to show how to get started, give suggestions on how to write articles as well as discussing hot topics or highlighting top contributions.

Who has impressed you in the Wiki community, and why?

I think everybody is doing a great job, but particularly the top contributors such as Ed Price, Rich Prescott and Susan Bradley has really impressed me.

What does success look like for TechNet Wiki?

New articles constantly being contributed as well as enhancements being made to existing ones. The TechNet Wiki is without doubt already a huge success.

Give a few words to encourage other Norwegians to join the Wiki

Although most technical content these days is in English many people prefer to read it in their native language. It would be awesome to see even more content at Norwegian articles on TechNet Wiki.

Thanks for sharing and contributing to the TechNet Wiki Jan Egil! See you at the next MVP Summit!
