Friday with International Community Update – Progress in each language (Oct. 2013)

Hello Community!
Today is Friday with International Community Update.

The end of October is as follows:

The topic of this month:

What locale is the oldest? (except English)

Have you already read the blog article "Happy Second Anniversary to the Wiki Ninja Blog!!!!!" posted by Maheshkumar S Tiwari?
By reading his article, I was impressed and I thought to search data to look back on a past. Thanks, Mahesh!!

So, I looked for the oldest article which has locale tag.

  • Only still remains. (I can't find the article which has already removed)
  • Order by Tagging time. (Not creating time)

The list is as follows.

The oldest article which have locale tag is zh-CN (in the English Wiki instance) !! Great Work Tony!
The next are Multilingual series of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP4 Release Notes.

As far as I searched, locale tag was started in earnest from March 2011 by pt-BR. And then, other languages began a little later. Please see pt-BR history.
Therefore, these multilingual articles by Ed were experiments to raise global community, I guess. Is it right?
If so, these experiments became a great success!!

Thanks!

  3. Gachay Mirzayev says:

It is nice to see Azerbaijan on this list! Well done!

  4. Thanks Tomoaki for this report, very interesting, as usual.

Glad to see that the french community continues to grow !

  5. As always, very interesting. Four new languages!! And has any language ever moved up in the rankings so fast?

  6. Tomoaki Yoshizawa – Thanks for sharing , How to find that article – Position 31 , tag : ta-IN , Language : Tamil – India

  7. I'm upset Tomoaki! The Turkish Community made the most non English articles this month and you did not mention it 🙁

    Thanks TAT 🙂

  8. Wow! Azeri jumped on the board with 39 articles!

And Gokan's right! Turkish beat Portuguese this month, which is incredible!

Gokan, when is Turkish going to have 1,000 articles? =^)

Also, great contributions from Spanish and French!

French is going to pass Persian soon!

    Thanks, everyone!

  9. I belive Q3 of 2014 we will pass 1000 articles.. (It's my hope)

  10. Regarding the first locale languages… very interesting, Tomoaki!

Yes, so I used the Release Notes and some similar documentation as a catalyst for a few things… (1) getting non-English articles on the Wiki, (2) building our first international support team (it has evolved greatly since then), and a few goals that weren't as focused on international growth… (3) awareness of the Wiki (the release notes and official documentation were catalysts for Wiki evangelism and adoption for a year or so), and (4) a process around how to handle official documentation on a Wiki.

Overall, a fantastic experiment and very helpful for all four initiatives… all four helped us pave the way for the future of the Wiki.

It's fun to remember past initiatives like this. The truth is that this monthly blog is paving the way for future progress as well. And a lot of other things we're currently working on, like the Portals, User Groups, and TechNet Guru awards. So we'll be looking at these initiatives fondly in the future as well. =^)

    Thanks again, Tomoaki!

  11. Hahaha!! I'm sorry, Gokan!

Turkish had already been beating Portuguese in May, so I was not surprised at that. But after all, it's great!

In addition, over 100 for one month is  fantastic! 🙂  Go Turkish Go!!

  12. I am really pleased that the Italian Wiki TechNet are in eighth place, well, we hope we can further improve with time.

  13. I was just kidding you Tomoaki :)..

  14. I just love this and wait for it every month!
