Interview with a Wiki Ninja: Fabrizio Volpe, an Italian MVP (Directory Services)

Hello Folks,

Welcome to our one more Monday Interview with a Wiki Ninja !

Today, the interview will be with Fabrizio Volpe. Fabrizio is an Italian MVP (Directory Services) and a wiki contributor !

Fabrizio Volpe's MVP Profile:

Who are you, where are you, and what do you do? What are your specialty technologies?

My name is Fabrizio Volpe. I live in Rome (Italy). I work in one of Italy's most important banking group within the office that deals with Microsoft technologies and virtualization solutions. My focus is on Directory Services and Unified Communications.

What are your big projects right now?

Right now, I am working with some publishers on projects that will be publically available in the coming months. In November, I will also attend the Interop conference in Mumbai (India) with a session on enterprise voice (hybrid and cloud)

Besides your work on TechNet Wiki, where do you contribute?

My main channel is my blog ( ) dedicated to Lync and Unified Communications. In addition, as often as possible, I broadcast videos on my YouTube channel ( ). Both are generating a considerable interest.

What is TechNet Wiki for? Who is it for?

Wiki is a project that allows everyone to find an additional value. In my case, it is like having a continuous peer review and an uninterrupted flow of updates on the published material. I also love the possibility to create open items (especially on design aspects) in which each individual contributor may suggest changes and adjustments. The result is always greater than the single input.

What do you do with TechNet Wiki, and how does that fit into the rest of your job?

Initially I published on the Wiki topics concerning Directory Services and Lync. I tried to select aspects that I felt were poorly documented. In later articles, I preferred design proposals topics, in which each person could contribute with its particular (real world) experience

What is it about TechNet Wiki that interests you?

TechNet Wiki is an unbelievable project, in which the contents are published at a very high pace. I find interesting both the continuous attention of the contributors to the new technologies and the effort to localize content in a large number of different languages.

On what articles have you collaborated with other community members on #TNWiki? What was that experience like?

My preferred article from this point of view is “Getting Started with Proposing a Deployment for a Small Lync Implementation” (  ). Comments from TechNet Wiki contributors have helped me in identifying many interesting critical aspects of the design that I was not able to see in the first version of the document.

On what Wiki articles do you spend most of your time?

As a Wiki user, I read often the articles dedicated to Virtualization and the Cloud. As a contributor, I hope to spend more time on Wiki articles in Italian in the next months.

What are your favorite Wiki articles you’ve contributed?

Understanding Simple URLs in Lync is by far my favorite (  ). It required a lot of work but as far as I know, many people have used it.

What are your top 5 favorite Wiki articles?

The page listing Italian articles on the TechNet Wiki ( ) is my favorite starting point. Luigi Bruno is making a terrific work on keeping the Italian contributor's community on track on Wiki (keep up the good work, Luigi ! )

The Lync portal is a great starting page too ( )

The Hyper-V: Survival Guide , Active Directory Replication Over Firewalls and PowerShell for Beginners are for sure on my list.

What are the top 5 Wiki articles or areas that need more attention and development?

Italian Wiki, Lync, Windows 2012, System Center, Federation Services and Hyper V are topics that should grow in the next months.

Who has impressed you in the Wiki community, and why?

Wiki is a group effort, so do not think it is correct to cite a single. I would like to say thank you to the TechNet Wiki International Council for its work on non-English articles.

What does success look like for TechNet Wiki?

It look like the numbers in this page . Over 1600 new articles in a month is an impressive result.

Do you have any comments for product groups about TechNet Wiki?

I would love to see a counter of hits and page-views for individual articles on Wiki. It would be important to understand what topics and explanations have a better reception.

 Thanks Fabrizio for this Interview.

Keep up the good work, keep on writing more and more Wiki's 🙂
