Interview with a Wiki Ninja: Luigi Bruno, MCC

Today's Monday Interview with a Wiki Ninja is with...

Luigi Bruno

Who are you, where are you, and what do you do? What are your specialty technologies?

English – Hi! I’m Luigi Bruno, software developer almost graduate in Computer Engineering at University of Salento (in Lecce, my hometown, in the South-East of Italy), a computer enthusiast since I was 8 years old, when I received my first personal computer, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum on which I started learning the BASIC language; after that, I’ve started using IBM PCs running MS-DOS 3.3 and going on until nowadays (I still have the installation discs and the magazines’ articles talking about MS-DOS 5 and Windows beta releases starting from version 3.1: sometimes I look at them with a bit of nostalgia).

During the years I’ve tried to learn as much as I can, driven by passion and curiosity for understanding the mechanisms behind many products and technologies: programming languages (Assembler, Assembler, C, C++, Java, Visual Basic, C#, Visual Basic .NET), development platforms (Java, Microsoft .NET), development tools (Visual Studio) and operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac OS), one of my main interests.

Italiano – Ciao!

How did you become an MCC? Do you have any suggestions for other community members who hope to eventually become MCCs?

English – The MCC Award was really a surprise for me.

I’ve entered the Microsoft Forums for the first time to ask a question concerning an issue with the Adobe Acrobat virtual printer occurred after Internet Explorer 9 installation on a Windows 7 x64 system; meanwhile, I’ve started to surf the web looking for a solution and I’ve casually found the Microsoft Answers Forum, where I’ve asked a question related to my problem. Shortly after, I’ve found the solution in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article and I’ve reported it in the Forum.

I’ve tried to answer to some questions until I was contacted by a Forum’s Moderator asking me to provide some informations about myself to enter the MPV evaluation process (that should be currently running); my Forum activity went one and on June the 28th I’ve received an e-mail message informing me I was awarded Microsoft Community Contributor.

How to become MCC? Study a lot to acquire a good knowledge in some areas of Microsoft technologies and start answering to Forum questions, even just suggesting to post the question in another and more appropriate Forum, provided that the answers is clear, complete and accurate; try to write some Wiki article or to fill in some stub pages created by someone else.

per avviare la procedura di valutazione come MVP (che dovrebbe essere in corso);

scrivere qualche articolo su TechNet Wiki o riempire qualche pagina stub creata
da qualcun’altro.

What are your big projects right now?

English – The first and most important goal to achieve is completing studies and getting graduated. I’d like to learn in more detail Windows Azure and Windows Phone 7 development and then learn more the F# language.

Talking about Wiki, I’m going to create a set of articles aimed at deeply examining the Windows file systems, referring to the overview article that I wrote two months ago: I’ve already started writing the first one (talking about FAT).

Maybe one day I’ll have to think about create my personal blog: it will be just a matter of time.

apprendimento di Windows Azure e dello sviluppo con Windows Phone 7;

(relativo a FAT) è già iniziato.

What do you do with TechNet Wiki, and how does that fit into the
rest of your job?

English – I use TechNet Wiki mainly to share knowledge and learn something more about topics that many expert wrote about. The articles come from the day-by-day activities and from the solution that I gave to problems I’ve faced while answering Forums’ question.

What is it about TechNet Wiki that interests you?

English – There are many interesting topics on the Wiki: personally, I focus primarily on software development, systems management and systems security.

On what articles have you collaborated with other community
members on #TNWiki? What was that experience like?

English – I worked with Bruno Lewin to create an article aimed at providing Wikiers with a set of guidelines to write an article in a language different than English: according to the comments and to the ratings, we have done a good job.

What are your favorite articles you’ve contributed?

English – The first I can talk about is the one related to the guidelines for writing non English language articles (that I wrote after a suggestion by Bruno Lewin); there also the article related to the Windows supported file systems and the one about the bugcheck analysis, written after analyzing many memory dump files to answer to some questions about this kind of problem in the TechNet Forums; I’ve also filled in many stub pages, that I come back to for reviewing and updating whenever necessary. Most of my articles is available both in Italian and in English.

A few weeks ago I’ve started translating into Italian the Development Portal, the Platforms Portal and the IT Security Portal: a big challenge!

Who has impressed you in the Wiki community, and why?

English – The first two names that come into my mind are Ed Price and Rich Prescott. Ed is very fast at creating so many useful pages (“If not a Wiki Ninja, you are a Wiki beast”, as Rich Prescott said), Rich has written many interesting and useful pages in the scripting area (I’ve asked myself why he has not been awarded MCC earlier): I think I’ll ask him to teach me something. ;-)

And don’t forget Yuri Diogenes!

not a Wiki Ninja, you are a Wiki beast”, come ha detto Rich Prescott), Rich ha

E non dimentichiamo Yuri Diogenes!

You've done fairly well on the Wiki. Do you have any tips or recommendations about editing or authoring articles?

English – Search the Wiki database to see if someone has yet written an article talking about the topic(s) you want to write about: if that’s the case, read carefully the article and try to find a way to improve it by adding new content or editing the existing one. You can also consider translating existing articles into your mother tongue to contribute to the Wiki localization.

Always remember to appropriately set the tags and to periodically review what you’ve done: accuracy is fundamental.
