Configuring the Web and Application Server Roles for Microsoft SharePoint Server and Foundation 2010 [UPDATED]

I’ve had a couple of questions on configuring the Web and Application server roles on Windows Server 2008 to support Microsoft SharePoint Server and Foundation 2010.  This post will describe the minimal prerequisite configuration to support Microsoft SharePoint Server and Foundation 2010 on Windows Server 2008.


PrerequisiteInstaller.exe can be used to programmatically configure Web and application servers and install the required prerequisite software.  See also

Optionally you can configure the required Roles, Roles Services, and Features by running the following statement from an elevated command prompt:

start /w pkgmgr /iu:IIS-WebServerRole;IIS-WebServer;IIS-CommonHttpFeatures;

  1. .NET Framework 3.5 with Service Pack 1 is required; however, installed by PrerequisiteInstaller.exe.

  3. The above pkgmgr commands will not configure the Application Server role services for SharePoint 2010. Use the following to configure those.

    Open elevated Windows Powershell command then follow:
    Import-Module ServerManager

    #Then Run this command
    Add-WindowsFeature Application-Server,AS-Web-Support,AS-TCP-Port-Sharing,AS-WAS-Support, AS-HTTP-Activation,AS-TCP-Activation,AS-Named-Pipes,AS-Net-Framework
