Getting to know SharePoint Online


Microsoft SharePoint Online offers
enterprise companies a flexible, web-based solution that includes tools
and services to help users manage information and collaborate
effectively. Based on MOSS 2007, this Microsoft hosted solution
provides users the ability to easily create and manage custom team and
project-focused sites for collaboration and personal productivity.

SharePoint Online is available as a standalone Online Services and also as a part of “Business Productivity Online Standard Suite” (BPOS). BPOS includes following 4 online services:

Features like 128-bit SSL encryption, intrusion
monitoring, 99.9% uptime, “my company” portal, sign-in application,
adminstration center and 24*7 web and phone support for the services
administrator, virus filtering and directory sync tool come with all
the online services. SharePoint Online will be available in 2 editions
– Standard and Dedicated of which only Standard edition is available as

Storage

Available storage is 250 MB per user account and 1
terabyte (TB) per company. Site storage quota is 50 gigabytes (GB) per
site collection and max Site collections allowed are 20 per
company. Additional storage can be purchased in terabyte (TB)
increments.

As per the Online Services website, Business
Productivity Online Standard Suite starts from $15 per user per month
and SharePoint Online Standard starts from $7.25 per user per month.

Log on to the Microsoft Online Services Customer Portal for more information.

Please note that, as of now, the complete suite
of Online services is not available in all countries, so first check if
the SharePoint Online service may is available in your country. For
this, goto the Customer Portal menioned above and select the country in
drop-down list and click on “Continue” button.

As of now, in US, both “Microsoft Business
Productivity Online Standard Suite” and “Microsoft Office Live
Meeting” are available as options whereas in India only “Microsoft
Office Live Meeting” is available.
