Severstal Makes the Switch from Lotus Notes to Microsoft

Severstal is one of Russia’s largest steel and mining companies.  With 92,000 employees in 10 countries, Severstal had been on Lotus Notes since 2003.  But as the company grew rapidly, Severstal was finding that it was difficult to integrate Notes with their Line of Business applications.  It also became extremely difficult to find qualified people to manage their Notes environment.  Severstal made the decision to switch over to Microsoft products including Microsoft Office 2010, Exchange Server 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, and Lync Server 2010.

Severstal’s Notes deployment worked OK, as long as it didn’t need to integrate with the current and new applications in the company.  Plus, Severstal had a growing list of Partners and customers, most using Microsoft Office products.  Severstal often had issues with deployment of additional functionality in Lotus Notes and employees were having problems with the Notes interface.

One of the biggest issues Severstal faced was finding qualified people who could manage their Notes infrastructure at a reasonable price.  Saddled with an increasingly complex environment without the qualified staff to support it, Severstal decided to move to Microsoft and leverage the strong and competitive Microsoft Partner ecosystem.

Severstal now finds that their Microsoft infrastructure fits their needs much better than their previous Notes environment.  Their employees are much happier working with familiar tools like Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.  And the remote capabilities they have with Outlook Anywhere and Outlook Web App have opened up new possibilities for a more flexible workforce. Efficiency of IW workers in the company were increasing after deployment of Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010 for new useful functionality.  And even company executives gave positive feedback after using collaboration tools in OneNote and the Office Web Apps.

Severstal is planning integrating its SAP environment with SharePoint 2010 and is deploying Lync Server 2010 to enable even more mobility and flexibility for employees who are traveling or telecommuting.  Severstal has been able to save money on overall maintenance by producing more professional-looking documents in house. And best of all, they have received great feedback from employees and executives on the new tools.

    How are those licensing costs working out for Serverstal? And how many staff are supporting the new environment, compared to before?

    How is the conversion of their custom applications coming along?  How much is it costing them to do this conversion or should I say how much of the cost is Microsoft helping them with?
