Happy Birthday, Exchange 2010!

It was just over a year ago that I had the privilege of launching Exchange 2010, standing on a stage in Berlin demoing some of the great new features in Exchange.  My enthusiasm has only grown in the past year.  Up to that point, I had already been on Exchange 2010 for over a year, and I was eager to see how our customers would receive the new version.  Well, the excitement and feedback has exceeded my expectations.

Phaeton Automotive has found Exchange 2010 to be a great improvement over their previous messaging system.

“We were able to deploy Exchange Server 2010 over a 10-day period. One of the leading reasons why we’re using Exchange is the powerful messaging functionality it gives us. The ability to have an archiving solution that integrates more fully with our e-mail system gives us a level of integration that we never had before when we were using the Google Apps platform.”  Jonathan Pisarczyk, Information Systems Group Manager, Phaeton Auto

One major success for the Exchange team this year was the migration of 700,000 mailboxes at the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).  The organization moved from Exchange 2003 to online Live@Edu accounts, powered by Exchange 2010.  It was the largest on-premise to online migration at that point, and it was gratifying to watch the migration proceed smoothly and validate the development choices we made years earlier.  Full Armor, the partner assisting KDE, says it best.

“Because of the ease of deploying in the cloud, we migrated 700,000 mailboxes at the Kentucky Department of Education in a long weekend.”  - Danny Kim, Chief Technology Officer, Full Armor Corporation

Our growing community of Partners who are working with customers every day are enthusiastic about Exchange 2010 as demand exceeds expectations.

“A full 50% of our Exchange customers have inquired or started moving to Exchange 2010.  We have also seen a large wave of interest from customers on Lotus Notes.”  Lars Riehn, CEO, infoWAN

Twice a year, the Exchange team runs a survey of businesses of all sizes asking what messaging system they use.  The research shows that Exchange market share has never been greater.  In US enterprises with over 500 PC’s, an incredible 73% of organizations use Exchange as their primary email system.  The next closest email platform is at 7%.  Even in small businesses in the G7, Exchange is used by more companies than any other single email system.  And many of you are already upgrading to Exchange 2010, over 12% of all enterprises in North America with Europe not far behind.

As many of you know, Exchange 2010 was built from the ground up for deployment on premise or in the cloud.  In the next year, we will be extending further into the cloud with Office 365, where customers of all sizes will be able to take advantage of Exchange 2010 as a service.  Already, over 11 million Live@Edu users are already benefiting from Exchange 2010.

Rajesh Jha also has a post on the EHLO blog today.  I look forward to an exciting 2011!
