Choosing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 for Data Warehousing

The warehousing of corporate data into an architecture from which it can all be accessed is no longer an option for midmarket and large companies that want to be successful. Consolidating the information so that it is readily accessible, and to give the team visibility for reporting, analytics, spot queries, and predictive capabilities is now necessary. Fortunately, pioneers established this long ago and this requirement is met in the field of data warehousing (DW) and business intelligence (BI).

White Paper: Microsoft Data Platform Development

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and the Microsoft data platform provide developers with a comprehensive programming framework in which to create data-centric solutions that target mobile devices, desktops, Web servers, and enterprise servers. This data programming environment improves developer productivity by integrating data access and management into the business logic of an application. It provides a comprehensive platform for data access and management from disparate data sources, and a scalable solution for data storage and applications.

White Paper: What's New for XML in SQL Server 2008

Microsoft introduced XML-related capabilities in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with the FOR XML and OPENXML Transact-SQL keywords, which enabled developers to write Transact-SQL code to retrieve a query result as a stream of XML and to shred an XML document into a rowset. SQL Server 2005 extended these XML capabilities significantly with the introduction of a native xml data type that supports XSD schema validation, XQuery-based operations, and XML indexing. SQL Server 2008 builds on the XML capabilities of previous releases and provides enhancements to meet the challenges that customers have faced when storing and manipulating XML data in the database.

White Paper: Managing Unstructured Data with SQL Server 2008

The proliferation of digital content has significant implications for the way in which organizations store and access business data. Increasingly, databases that are at the core of business applications must be integrated with unstructured data in the form of documents, images, video content, and other multimedia formats. Organizations increasingly need to be able to store and manage digital data of all formats in order to manage the information life cycle, meet compliance requirements, and implement content management solutions.

https://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/wp-sql-2008-manage-unstructured.aspx

White Paper: Delivering Location Intelligence with Spatial Data

The growing ability of businesses and consumers to quickly absorb large volumes of data, together with the increased availability of digital maps and spatially enabled applications, has created an unprecedented opportunity to incorporate geographic factors into decision-making processes and analyses. The new spatial support in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 can help you to make better decisions through visual analysis of location data that can be stored and manipulated in a SQL Server database.

https://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/wp-sql-2008-spatial-data.aspx

White Paper: Server Consolidation with SQL Server 2008

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 supports multiple options for server consolidation, providing organizations with the flexibility to choose the consolidation approach that best meets their requirements to centralize data services management and to reduce hardware and maintenance costs. By providing centralized management, auditing, and monitoring capabilities, SQL Server 2008 makes it easy to manage multiple databases and data services, which significantly reduces administrative overheads in large enterprises.

TechNet Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008: Securing Your System (Level 200)Wednesday, April 02, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

While it is extremely important to secure your data, it is also vital to secure your system also. One without the other is not a secure solution. In this webcast, we look at the systems on which Microsoft SQL Server relies and runs. Contoso made two major decisions concerning their data: the first was to use Microsoft SQL Server 2008, the second was to move to Windows Server 2008 at the back end and Windows Vista at the front end. These two operating systems together offered the best solution going forward. In this session, we focus on the Windows Server 2008 part of the combination to look at the features that enabled Contoso to secure their systems that run SQL Server and its required services. Key security features that we cover are: surface area configuration policies, external key management, Network Access Protection (NAP), and Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption.

MSDN Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server: Synchronize Your Data Using the Microsoft Sync Framework (Level 100)Friday, April 04, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

Join this series as we look at Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as a productive data platform. Throughout this series, we use Contoso (Container Overseas Shipping Operation) LTD as our scenario customer while we explore the features that make SQL Server 2008 this platform. Contoso is a shipping company; they arrange the shipping of all kinds of items around the globe, from small individual items to large manufactured items. Contoso has seen growth in its business over the past years, especially in the movement of goods from China around the world. While Contoso is happy with their in-house applications and believe they provide significant business advantage over competitors, Contoso wants to ensure that these applications are running on the best productive platform to maintain this advantage, especially as their business grows worldwide. In this session , we look at how Contoso is empowering its mobile workforce to work and synchronize data when away from the office. Contoso has agents and employees out in the field, either delivering or collecting consignments, inspecting consignments, or visiting customers to quote jobs. These field employees use a variety of devices, from Pocket PCs to tablet PCs. To ensure that these employees have the latest information, Contoso is updating its applications to take advantage of the Microsoft Sync Framework to let these devices store data locally, run executables, and sync the data later. Join us as we cover the Sync Framework and describe how to best create these types of applications.

TechNet Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008: Ensuring Business Continuity (Level 200)Monday, April 07, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

Contoso expansion over the past years increased the challenges the IT organization faced with regard to the increased number of offices and data growth. As jobs come in and consignments travel around the globe, different external organizations require information 24-7. The Microsoft SQL Server systems have to be available around the clock around the world. In this session, we look at high availability options in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 that help ensure that these systems are there when they are needed--regardless of what component has failed.

TechNet Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008: Scale Your Business (Level 200)Monday, April 14, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

Contoso, like most firms, found that once one database is deployed, others soon follow. Unless planned, these deployments can scale out of control. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 offers a number of features that provide solutions for Contoso to scale out and up, while maintaining control. In this webcast, we show you how to take advantage of the latest hardware, such as 64-bit, hot add memory, and CPU, as well as software features. Learn to speed up query processing with Partitioned Table Parallelism through backup and compression, and to speed up backup times and replication.

TechNet Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008: Predictable Response to Your Users (Level 200)Wednesday, April 16, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

At any given time, Contoso's servers provide multiple services to users and applications. Using Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Contoso would like to achieve better performance with its workloads. In this session, we look the Resource Governor, which enables administrators to define limits and assign priorities to individual workloads that are running on a SQL Server instance. We also look at Plan Freezing in SQL Server 2008, which enables greater query performance stability and predictability by providing new functionality to lock down query plans. This enables organizations to promote stable query plans across hardware server replacements, server upgrades, and production deployments.

TechNet Webcast: 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008: Performance Troubleshooting (Level 200)Monday, April 21, 2008 11:30 AM Pacific Time (US & Canada)

An area of concern for Contoso is the monitoring and troubleshooting of any performance issues it may encounter on Microsoft SQL Server 2008. In this session, we cover the tools available for IT departments as they troubleshoot performance. We look at Performance Studio, the features available, and how to use them to analyze performance. We also cover how to use the Best Practice Analyzer for SQL Server, and utilizing the results it provides.
