What’s new: Business Intelligence Indexing Connector

Important: The Microsoft Business Intelligence Indexing Connector free download was removed from the download site. Customers who have downloaded the Business Intelligence Indexing Connector as of March 2011 will continue to be supported as per standard support procedures. However, Business Intelligence Indexing Connector will not be tested or supported for SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1.

----------------------------------------------------

Because business intelligence (BI) assets such as SQL Server Reporting Services RDL files, PowerPivot files, and Excel files are increasingly being shared in SharePoint libraries, it is important to give specified end users the ability to discover these files or BI assets.

As an IT professional, you can deploy Microsoft Business Intelligence Indexing Connector (BIIC) to enhance search capabilities for Excel and Reporting Services reports and their underlying data sources. When BIIC is installed, an additional search tab called “Reports” becomes part of the SharePoint search page. By using the Reports search tab, your users will see improved results, descriptions, thumbnails, and previews and will have the ability to refine search results to quickly and easily find the information they need.

The searchable business intelligence assets include XLSX and XLSM documents, which are natively created by Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 and Excel 2010. PowerPivot and SQL Server Reporting Services files are also searched.

The following diagram shows a distributed deployment that includes FAST and SharePoint Server 2010.
