(Networking) Tip of the Day: Hot Add/Remove vNics in Hyper-V

Today’s Tip…

Did you know you could hot add/remove Virtual NICs in Windows 10 Hyper-V?

Windows 10 Hyper-V allows you to add or remove a Network Adapter while the virtual machine is running, without incurring downtime.  Adding or removing a virtual network adapter no longer requires that the VM be stopped.  This works for generation?2 virtual machines running both Windows and Linux guest operating systems and greatly increases management flexibility when runtime reconfiguration of a virtual machines is required.

Requirements

  • Windows 10 Client Hyper-V
  • A Windows guest operating system supported by generation 2 virtual machines (Windows 8 and later or Windows Server 2012 and later)
  • A generation 2 Virtual Machine
