Tip of the Day: CSV Placement Policies

Today’s Tip…

Imagine an eight node cluster coming up from a complete shutdown.? Then imagine that this is a Hyper-V cluster with hundreds of VMs, all trying to start up on that first node that came online.

But wait!? In Windows Server 2012 R2, we introduced a new feature that will help to keep this poor server from drowning: CSV placement policies.? As additional nodes come online, Cluster Shared Volumes (CSVs) are balanced so as to take load off the first up node.

This intelligent placement is triggered under the following scenarios:

  • CSV failover
  • A node rejoins the cluster
  • A new node to the cluster
  • A cold start of the cluster
