(Cloud) Tip of the Day: Microsoft Azure supports TRIM

Today’s (Cloud) Tip…

As of this fall, Microsoft Azure fully supports TRIM. You can see the documentation for TRIM at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848053(v=vs.85).aspx. The best thing about this is that it means you no longer have to worry about paying for unused storage space in Azure. This has led me to recommend customers always create 1 TB data disks. This means they no longer have to worry about having to figure out how to expand the disk in the future while still only paying for the storage they actually use.

Hi Robert – quick typo clarification – I assume your recommendation is for customers to create 1Tb disks, not 1Gb?

I’ve always provisioned disks as thinly as possible to avoid additional cost (even though it’s not much). This is a real game-changer for me as far as ease of deployment and ongoing management is concerned.

Long time reader, first time caller. Love the Tip of the Day, and look forward to it each morning. Keep up the great work.
