Tip of the Day: Say good-bye to DCPROMO

Today’s Tip…

I don’t work with Active Directory that much but one of the things that I always remembered how to do was how to create a domain controller…run DCPROMO. This hasn’t changed for as far back as my Windows server experience goes (NT4.0). Imagine my dismay when in Windows Server 2012 when I saw this…

SAY IT ISN’T SO!!! But it is so. DCPROMO was deprecated in Windows Server 2012.

Actually it’s still pretty easy to do. Just install the AD Services feature and you will get prompted in the Action Center to configure your domain controller.

Follow the wizard and VIOLA! You have a new domain.

NOTE: It is still possible to use DCPROMO with an unattended script for those organizations that really need to continue using it.
