Tip of the Day: SMB 3.0 and 8.3 File Names

Today’s Tip…

SMB transparent failover in Windows Server 2012 is the capability for a SMB server to provide continuously available (CA) remote file storage in a Windows Server Failover Cluster. However, transparent Failover does not support cluster disks with 8.3 name generation enabled.

While 8.3 file name (aka short file name) creation is disabled by default, the New Volume wizard does make it easy to re-enable it on a per volume basis.

So remember NOT to enable short file names if the volume is to be used in such a scenario.
