Office applications crash when opening files from Outlook in Protected View on Windows 10

It's been reported that after upgrading to Windows 10, when opening Office files from Outlook emails, or OWA, the Office applications appear to launch but then throw an error before finally crashing. This only occurs when Protected View is enabled for opening files as attachments.

 ERROR Example:
Word experienced an error trying to open the file.
                Try these suggestions.
                * Check the file permissions for the document or drive
                * Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space
                * Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.

Note: Various versions of this error will occur with each individual application.

RESOLUTION:

Try updating your DisplayLink driver if in use.  DisplayLink recommends v7.9 (or later) software for use with Windows 10. For this particular issue, we've found that version 7.9M4 was necessary to resolve the issue.

Excel 2016 will not open in Windows 10. Error message opens and states, Excel has stopped working and will be closed. Did updates and analyzer, but it does not help.

This doesn’t work. Downloaded the driver as recommended, only to get an icon in my taskbar saying “No DisplayLink devices detected”. Great. And I still cannot open the Excel application in Office 2013. I have wasted hours on this problem: OffCAT hasn’t come up with any other issues, so I am left high and dry.

I have the latest driver from Display Link installed, yet it crashes. I don’t use additional displays. This issue is from my laptop HP Elitebook Pro 840 G1,8 GB RAM, 64-bit running Windows 10 Enterprise Version 10.0.10586 Build 10586 and running Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013. The error occurred with Excel 2013 (15.0.4919.1000) MSO (15.0.4919.1002) 32 Bit .
