Dell expands support for Storage Spaces in Windows Server with PowerVault MD3060e

A few months ago this blog covered Dell’s announcement of support for Storage Spaces in Windows Server with their PowerVault MD1200 and MD1220 storage enclosures.  Today, Dell has expanded that support with their high density MD3060e enclosures.  This enables customers to create higher density configurations.

Storage Spaces in Windows Server virtualizes storage by creating storage pools, enabling the creation of virtual disks from those pools, and providing more advanced features such as automatic storage tiering and disk resiliency.  It combines with Dell’s storage-optimized PowerEdge servers, PowerVault MD3060e and global support and services to provide a high-performance, affordable storage solution.

The PowerVault MD3060e, formerly used only as an expansion enclosure for Dell’s MD3 dense array series, can now be used directly with Storage Spaces.  The MD3060e is a compact 4U 60-HDD enclosure that supports a mix of NL-SAS, SAS or SSD drives and has a maximum capacity of 240 TB per enclosure and can scale to 960 TB when 4 enclosures are connected together.

Dell is Microsoft’s largest OEM partner to have implemented support for Storage Spaces, and provides the most complete Storage Spaces implementation – server, controller, JBOD and disks - forming an end-to-end solution, including new features such as JBOD monitoring.  Customers can build dense storage configurations on these Microsoft and Dell technologies, including Dell’s PowerEdge Servers, SAS 6Gb/s HBAs, persistent reservation HDDs and SSDs, and now with three Dell Storage enclosures – the MD1200, MD1220 and MD3060e.
