Telefónica Uses Hybrid-Cloud Strategy to Keep their Customers Connected
Customers often ask us for case studies and whitepapers that offer insight into actual implementations of Microsoft technology and services. The following information is excerpted from a case study soon to be published on Microsoft.com. The customer is Telefónica, S.A and they are migrating thousands of servers to a Hybrid-Cloud solution.During Brad Anderson’s keynote in TechEd Europe, he highlighted one of the customers transforming their datacenter using a hybrid cloud approach. Telefónica, one of the world’s largest telecommunications providers, is making sweeping changes in how it delivers IT services to the business. The telecommunications industry is quickly changing rapidly and to ensure they have the optimal infrastructure to support the business they are using a hybrid private-public cloud strategy based on Microsoft software.
The company decided to build a 15,000-meter Tier 4 data center in Madrid, Spain, and consolidate its 27 European data centers—containing approximately 18,000 physical servers—into this state-of-the-art, highly reliable data center where they will consolidate to just 1,600 physical servers. A Tier IV data center (as defined by the Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers) provides 99.995 percent uptime by making extensive use of redundant components and a fault-tolerant infrastructure.
Its private cloud, based on Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V technology, is the cornerstone of a new Tier 4 Madrid data center. Soon, it will link this private cloud to Windows Azure, the Microsoft public cloud service, to give the business tremendous flexibility in where it runs its IT workloads. With a hybrid-cloud strategy, Telefónica can deliver IT services to the business in days instead of months and make them far more reliable.
As Adrian Steel, Global Infrastructure & Production Lead at Telefónica says, “As we go on this spectacular journey if you imagine a vision of 18,000 servers virtualized in a world-class data center, on a world-class platform, fundamentally, with all the data in one location, supporting a Telefonica hybrid cloud vision with a Microsoft cloud OS vision, actually these things mean that anything is possible.”
