Virtualizing Enterprise Applications With Confidence

Those of you that have implemented virtualization technologies, such as Windows Server with Hyper-V, have been able to experience the benefits it provides to you and your company through the consolidation of enterprise workloads in virtual machines, which in turn helps to reduce your hardware, power and cooling, and maintenance costs.

Many of you choose to begin your virtualization deployments with your “low hanging fruit” applications and services, such as those that are web-based, or file and print for example.  As you’re starting to do your research or beginning your initial virtualization deployments, one of the questions many of you look for answers to is whether the technology is capable of delivering the performance and scalability required for your tier-1 and tier-2 applications.

I’m pleased to report that with Hyper-V and System Center you have the virtualization platform you need to receive the benefits virtualization has to offer, along with enterprise-class scalability and performance for your applications.

To help validate this, we’ve been working with a third party, Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) Labs, to test the performance and scalability of a variety of enterprise workloads in virtualized environments.  You can find the collective results of their tests at this link.

ESG Labs tested a variety of Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V virtualization scenarios for enterprise workloads including SQL Server 2012, SQL Server Appliances, VDI, and Dynamics CRM 2011.  The documented results from the tests provide some impressive results including:

  • SQL Server 2012 - showing performance of a single VM within 88% of a physical server and scaling to 2,090 OLTP transactions per second.
  • SQL Server Appliance - powered by Hyper-V, provided enterprise class performance and scalability. ESG Lab scaled OLTP workloads in up to 320 SQL Server VMs on a ½ rack appliance (DBCA) across four physical blades while sustaining near-linear performance and manageably low response times.
  • VDI scenario - Hyper-V, in conjunction with Quest Workspace Desktop Virtualization, provided a scalable, cost-effective VDI solution, by leveraging Quest HyperCache technology and DAS to scale up to 3,000 VDI users and reduce total IOPS by up to 85%.
  • Dynamics CRM 2011 - Testing with 40,000 concurrent users sustained 93,024 total business transactions per hour, 637,560 web requests per hour, and 1,137 SQL Server transactions per second with an average response time of 0.37 seconds.
