Windows 7 now in Amharic!

Windows 7 in Amharic -  the national language of Ethiopia – is now available for download.

This “Language Interface Pack” version of Amharic Windows 7 must be installed on a system that runs an English client version of Windows 7. It is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

Trivia about Amharic:

  • With the Rastafarian movement strongly being connected to Ethiopia it comes as no surprise that roots reggae musicians like Lincoln Thompson and Misty-in-Roots have written songs in Amharic. Bob Marley took an Amharic name, Berhane Selassie (the Light of the Holy Trinity) when he was baptized into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church shortly before his death. The "Ras" in Rastafari means ‘duke’ or ‘chief’ in Amharic, and “tafari” comes from Tafari Makonnen, the name of Haile Selassi I before he became emperor.

Terminology and the user interface translations for Amharic will be available on Microsoft Language Portal site in February. The Amharic Windows 7 LIP is produced as part of the Local Language Program.
