System Center Data Protection Manager v2 - can you get excited about storage?

There are those that do. Perhaps you? For most people topics like “data storage” and “backup/retention” just sound dull. That is until things go horribly wrong. Investing some time and effort ahead of time can save you a great deal of pain. System Center Data Protection Manager (SCDPM) is a replacement for Data Protection Manager.

SCDPM provides the means to automatically take online backups of your live applications including Microsoft Exchange, Sharepoint, SQL and your virtual servers too. One of the SCDPM engineers recently said “there’s no such thing as a closed file to SCDPM” – that’s powerful.

As is common with many new Microsoft server products SCDPM can be fully managed with Powershell so you have extensive scripting and automation “in the box”.

My favourite feature of SCDPM is that you can deal with all of the data for a particular line of business transaction as a single object. You can back up everything associated with the transaction including the associated workspaces, databases and email messages.

SCDPM has been in Beta for some time and is due(all being well) “in the shops” data centre by Christmas!

If you are a storage geek then I’d love to hear from you.
