Irritating Update manager - how not to apply security updates

I use a popular third party application which has recently offered to keep itself up to date with security updates - this is a good start. Sadly that's about the only good thing about it as whilst the Update Manager installs updates it leaves a progress window on the screen which can't be minimised - even worse it insists upon making me reboot the system though at least it gives me the option to "reboot later".

I know Microsoft products used to force reboots far too often though thankfully that's rarely the case these days. The third party application in question here is only performing high level functionality so quite why it believes a reboot is required is a mystery. I can't help wondering whether the developer figured it was the easiest way to make sure the updates installed properly.
