SharePoint 2013 RTM Setup and Install

       Time to post a bit about SharePoint 2013 Winking smile

Since the RTM bits were already available from MSDN/TechNet download for subscribers, the first view of you may have already played around with it.
For general availability, there is currently no published date yet but should be soon announced.

So here is a brief summary for the “first try”:

  1. if you are a MSDN or TechNet subscriber, go to https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/hh442904 and sign-in for downloading SharePoint 2013 RTM
  2. You can also get a public Trial download available at :  Download Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013
  3. Next, get the Pre-Requisites for installing SharePoint 2013 RTM here: Hardware and software requirements for SharePoint 2013
  4. Download the Pre-Requisites for “Offline Installation”
  5. Plan, setup and configure:
  6. Related to AppFabric, aka. Disctributed Cache Service

 

Now that you’ve done a whole lot of stuff, hopefully all installed and setup successfully, start playing around with all the new things and verify the difference between SharePoint 2010 and 2013.

  4. In your list above you have a list of patches to be installed, but it's not clear on which server they should be installed, SQL? SP?

    If you mean the "Additional Fixes and Software" from section "Pre-requisites, well they are for SharePoint Servers unless they are especially emphasized to be installed on SQL or other servers. If you are confused because of the last few in the list, like the "Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client 64…" etc., these are client components that are required running on the SharePoint servers and not meanmt to be isntalled on SQL servers!
    All patches/hotfixes must be installed on every SharePoint server in farm equally to ensure consistent level across the farm.
    Even though SQL server is part of the SharePoiint farm, it is commonly considered as a "different" box, hence a typical SharePoint patch/hotfix is not considered to be installed on SQL unless its explicitly specified and told to do so!
