April 2017 CU for SharePoint Server 2016 is available for download

The product group released the April 2017 Cumulative Update for SharePoint Server 2016 product family.
This CU also includes Feature Pack 1 which was released with November 2016 CU.
The KB articles for April 2017 CU are available at the following location:

  • KB 3178718 – April 2017 Update for SharePoint Server 2016 (language independent)
  • KB 3178721 – April 2017 Update for SharePoint Server 2016 (language dependent fixes)
  • KB 3127895 – April 2017 Update for Office Online Server 2016 – this is also a security update!

The download for April 2017 CU is available through the following link:

Be aware that as well the language independent and the language dependent fix is required to fully patch a SharePoint server as each SharePoint installation comes with a language independent component and a language dependent component. If additional language pack are added later (only) the language dependent fix has to be applied again.
It is irrelevant which language you pick on the drop down in download center. Even the language dependent fixes are all in the same package for all languages.
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2016 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm. If you prefer to run the command line version psconfig.exe ensure to have a look here for the correct options.
SharePoint 2016 April 2017 CU Build Numbers:
Language Independent fix: 16.0.4522.1000
Language Dependent fix: 16.0.4522.1000
To understand the different version numbers please have a look at my article which explains the different SharePoint build numbers.
You can use the SharePoint Server 2016 Patch Build Numbers Powershell Module to identify the patch level of all SharePoint components.

  1. Hi Stefan,
Do you have any insight into why the Office Online Server 2016 security update 3127895 isn’t listed in the Security Update guide(https://aka.ms/securityupdateguide) or when running MBSA against the server?

    1. I just checked and it is listed in the security update guide.

      1. Thanks, I see it there now that I double checked.
My issue is that I was filtering to Product=”Microsoft Office Online Server 2016″.
The update is listed with the product name “Office Online Server”, which isn’t something the filter displays.
The October 2016 security update 3127897 is listed with the Product name “Microsoft Office Online Server 2016”. It would be nice if were consistent.

  2. Where is the official Office Online Server update list? Just like SharePoint has this page – https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt715807(v=office.16).aspx and Project Server has this one – https://technet.microsoft.com/library/c6fcdf1e-85c7-4f90-b6a0-3e82769fcf26
I can’t find anything similar for Office Online Server. OWA is listed here https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Office-Updates-a118ec61-f007-492f-bfa5-5a6f764d5471?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US but no Office Online Server under 2016.
If I search the Microsoft Update Catalog by “Office Online Server”, I can see only security updates – http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Office%20Online%20Server
Does that mean that Office Online Server will never have anything like a CU that adds functionality?

“2.If this is a new release of Office Online Server that you downloaded from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC), then you must uninstall the existing version before you install the new version.
(If this is an update from Microsoft Update, then there’s no need to uninstall Office Online Server.)”

  3. Hi Stefan,
Office Online Server is with “Office Online Server (April 2017)” supported on Server 2016.
On MSDN and VLSC I can only find “Office Online Server (Last updated March 2017)” do we need to install this one and patch with KB3127895 ?

    1. Hi Nitin,
I just double checked and this is not a known issue.
If you need assistance to analyze this I would recommend to open a support case with Microsoft.
      Cheers,
      Stefan

  5. Noob question maybe, but is there an order to follow when installing language specific/non-specific patches on a SharePoint server?

    Reply

    1. There is no specific order required but I personally always start with the language independent ones and install the language dependent ones afterwards.
