December 2014 CU for SharePoint 2013 has been released

The product group released the December 2014 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2013 product family.

For December 2014 CU we have full server packages (also known as Uber packages). No other CU is required to fully patch SharePoint.

ATTENTION:

Be aware that all Updates for SharePoint 2013 require SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 OR March 2013 PU for SharePoint 2013 to be installed first.

Please also have a look at the article that discusses how to properly patch a SharePoint 2013 farm which has Search enabled (see below).

Previous releases of the SharePoint Server 2013 cumulative update included both the executable and the .CAB file in the same self-extracting executable download. Because of the file size, the SharePoint Server 2013 package has been divided into several separate downloads. One contains the executable file, while the others contain the CAB file. All are necessary and must be placed in the same folder to successfully install the update. All are available by clicking the same Hotfix Download Available link in the KB article for the release.

This CU includes all SharePoint 2013 fixes released since RTM. The CU does not include SP1. You can install SP1 before or after installing this CU.

The KB articles for December CU will be available at the following locations in a couple of days:

  • KB 2910945 – SharePoint Foundation 2013 December 2014 CU
  • KB 2910938 – SharePoint Server 2013 December 2014 CU
  • KB 2910911 – SharePoint Server 2013 with Project Server December 2014 CU
  • KB 2899574 – Office Web Apps Server 2013 December 2014 CU

The Full Server Packages for December 2014 CU are available through the following links:

After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2013 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm.

Be aware that the SharePoint Server 2013 CU contains the SharePoint Foundation CU. And the SharePoint Server 2013 with Project Server CU contains Project Server CU, SharePoint Server CU and SharePoint Foundation CU.

  1. Why is KB2899585 – Hotfix for SharePoint Foundation 2010 included in SharePoint 2013 CU? It's one of the links in the "Issues that this cumulative update fixes" section of KB2910938.

  2. Hi Stefan,
I have installed the CU on my SharePoint Server Farms.
Is there a known issue about incoming email? Since I updated the farms the emails stuck in the Drop folder.
"The Incoming E-Mail service has completed a batch. The elapsed time was 00:00:00.0155941. The service processed 2 message(s) in total.

    Errors occurred processing 2 message(s):"

Did anyone else have this issue after installing this CU?

  3. Hi Bernd,

some people mentioned something similar about November CU in a forum but seems nobody contacted Microsoft Support on this.
Might be a configuration specific issue. I would recommend to open a support case with Microsoft to get this investigated.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

a workaround seems to be to remove storage sites quota or increase "Sandboxed Solutions Resource Quota".

  12. Hi Leon, if you have trouble with a CU you should open support case with Microsoft.
That’s the only method to allow us to investigate.

  13. We're currently on SP2013 sp1 and we are experiencing no issues from OOB SharePoint. I don't want to install an update that could cause us issues, but don't want to get too far behind on them either. What is your suggestion on this Stefan? Should we update
to keep our farm current, or can we wait until Service Pack 2 comes out, or we experience an issue that can be solved by a CU or patch? Thanks….. Bob

  14. Hi Bob,
it is recommended to evaluate and install all the public update (which include security fixes) as soon as possible but CUs only if they contain a specific fix you need or if advised by Microsoft support.

I am installing the extracted December CU on top of March 2013 PU on Win 2012 server, After running the UberSrv exe I see the Detection. Then the install goes to Extrating Files, Please wait state and fails with message "The installation of this package failed"

    Please advise.

  17. Hi Rajesh,
I would recommend to check the MSI installer logs and if you can’t figure out what went wrong by yourself using these logs you should open a support case with Microsoft.

  18. Hello Stefan

At the beginning of this article, it states:

"Be aware that all Updates for SharePoint 2013 require SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 OR March 2013 PU for SharePoint 2013 to be installed first."

However, later in this article, it states:

"This CU includes all SharePoint 2013 fixes released since RTM. The CU does not include SP1. You can install SP1 before or after installing this CU…."

This language is somewhat contradictory. The first statement indicates that SP1 or March 2013 PU is required, while the second statement inidcates that SP1 can be installed before or after the installation of this CU.

    ‘Suggest rewording this to clarify.

    Best,
    Steve

  19. Hi Steve,

not sure where you see a problem.
    There is no contradiction.
You can install SP1 before or after this CU.
If after you need to install March 2013 PU before.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

  20. Hi Stefan,

I am installing December 2014 CU but I get "The installation of this package failed." any idea how to fix this?

    Thank you,
    Rodel

  21. Hi Rodel,
that is a very generic error. I would suggest to use MSI logging. If you can’t figure out what is going on on yourself as I would recommend to open support case with Microsoft.

  22. Hi siasmj,

we also have received no solution from Premier Support so far.
As the document upload from mail is very important to us, I have written a powershell script which gets the email attachment and uploads it to the email enabled document library.

    This is currently our workaround.

    Best regards,
    Bernd

  23. I also got the error "The installation of this package failed." when trying to install the December 2014 CU. I tried to configure MSI logging, but was unable to figure out how to do it for MS Windows Server 2012. Found a few postings on how to configure
MSI logging for other version of windows along with buttons that would fix it for you, but none of those worked for Server 2012. However, I did notice that I didn't have enough disk space on the drive containing the CU install files. So I moved the CU install
files to another drive with more space and got past the error. I think it would be helpful if the ubersrv.exe either created an installation log file or had an option to do it.

  24. We are running November 2014 CU farm and we just enabled Incoming e-mail.
We had also issues with e-mail .eml files that were stuck in Drop folder.

We had to change Site Collection Quotas and Locks /
Sandboxed Solutions Resource Quota / Limit maximum usage per day to: 0 -> 999999
    Site storage quota is enabled.

Now Incoming mail service is running on two front end servers and working fine.

Can someone test if the same change works with December 2014 CU?
We need to decide whether to upgrade or not…

  25. Addition to previous comment, we got this in ULS log when files were stuck in Drop folder:
"The Incoming E-Mail service has completed a batch. The elapsed time was 00:00:00. The service processed 1 message(s) in total. Errors occurred processing 1 message(s): Message ID:"

  26. Add us to the list of users with emails stuck in the drop folder. Increasing storage quotas and changing the sanboxed solutions quota did not make a difference on our farm.

  27. I had the same incoming email issue after the December CUs. My fix was to enable sandbox quotas but I also had to make sure the email option for sandbox quotas was checked. Just enabling sandbox quotas without also enabling an email alert wasn't enough.
Now it works fine in the Project environment I patched but I'm waiting until this is fixed in a future CU before applying it to an SP farm with a ton of sites that would all need their quotas to be touched.

  28. Hi,

We are planning to upgrade our environments with Dec 2014 CU, I just saw the discussion around emails getting stuck on the drop folder, was this issue ever resolved by Microsoft?

Just wanted to know if this is the case…

    Regards,
    Sudhir

  29. Hi Sudhir,

as December 2014 CU is the latest CU there is no way that Microsoft could have resolved.
Fixes for issues found in a CU are usually resolved a couple of CUs later.

For the issue mentioned above a workaround exists (see the comments) and a fix is currently in development.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

  30. Great. Just installed a 7 server farm for a customer with 2013 Dec'14 CU. Farm heavily relies on Incoming E-mail. Shame didn't read this bug first. Hope the quota setting is really a workaround as some post above describe it's not fixed even with the workaround
    enabled.

  31. Hi,
I installed Dec. 2014 CU on my farm's 4 servers. It appeared to me all installations were successful. But When I tried to run the Sharepoint Configuration Wizard, it shows KB2910938 is missing on one server, so the Wizard did not run.
I went back to the server that missed the KB and try to re-install the cu again, the installation told me that there is no products affected by this package installed on this system.

What should I do to now? Please help.

    Thank you

  32. I would recommend to open a support case with Microsoft in case you run into a problem installing a CU which you cannot resolve on your own to get the issue analyzed.

  37. Hi Stefan,

I experience same "mail stuck in drop folder" issue on one SP 2010 Foundation farm with problematic CU. I see the April 2015 CU for SP2010 is released but I cannot see that it is addressing this issue in the "Improvements and Fixes" section of the KB. Is this
    fixed in this CU?

    Thanks,

Regarding your question: the SP2010 fix was released on Tuesday with May 2015 CU.

all patch levels older than April 2018 CU are no longer supported and have been removed from download center.
Please install a recent CU instead.
