August 2013 CU for SharePoint 2010 has been released

The product group released the August 2013 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2010 product family.

Be aware that the August Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 is a Post-SP1 hotfix. That means that you should ensure that SP1 is installed before the August CU.

The KB articles for August CU are availabe at the following locations:

  • KB 2825990 – SharePoint Foundation 2010
  • KB 2825949 – SharePoint Server 2010
  • KB 2825959 – SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server
As you see there is a separate Full Server Package for SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server which simplifies patching of this common installation.

The Full Server Packages for August 2013 CU are available through the following links:

Be aware that the SharePoint Server 2010 CU contains the SharePoint Foundation CU. And the SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server CU contains Project Server CU, SharePoint Server CU and SharePoint Foundation CU.
That means only one package has to be installed for the SharePoint 2010 product family.

  1. Beginning with the SharePoint 2010 June 2013 CU (KB2817527), and now the August 2013 CU (KB2817570), the server package includes a CAB file (ubersrv_1.CAB) in addition to the executable.

Curious about the logic behind this change …

  2. Its because we are reaching a physical file size limit of 2GB. So it had to be split.

  3. Hi Stefan,

Is this a "Post-SP2 hotfix"?   What's the relationship between SP2 and August 2013 CU?

  4. Hi Eric,

June CU and August CU are both Post SP2 CUs.

But you can install August CU in SP1 or SP2.

  5. Hi Stefan,

Again on clean installation SP server 2010 I installed SP2, then trying install Aug update and got

"The expected version of the product was not found on the system."

When i trying install SP2 again, i got

"There are no products affected by this package installed on this system."

    instead of

"The update is already installed on this system."

    Thanks, Roman

  7. Hi Stefan,

I am bit confused. Why is it now optional to install SP2 before installing August 2013 CU? Does this mean August 2013 CU contains all fixes that came in SP2? Normally we had to install SP2 before installing any CU's that were released after the service pack release? Will installing SP2 be optional for Oct 2013 CU and/or for all future CUs?

    Thanks

  8. Hi Nishan,

Microsoft always supports the latest and the previous service pack for up to 12 months after release of the latest service pack. That means 12 month after release of a Service pack CUs can always be installed on as well the previous service pack (here SP1) and the lastest Service pack (SP2).

Internally the package contains the fix for both baselines. Thats why the CU packages suddenly become much smaller 12 month after a Service pack has been released: the fixes for the older baseline (older Service pack) are no longer included.

And no: August 2013 CU does not contain SP2.

    Cheers,

    Stefan

  9. Hello Stefan, Is SP1 Required, is it acceptable to go straight to SP2 + August CU from RTM?

  10. Hi Bluephaze,

no need to go to SP1.

Be aware that October CU has released today.

  11. Hello Stefan, I had the issue a few have posted with the August 2013 CU (support.microsoft.com/…/2825949) where I received the error "The expected version of the product was not found on the system".  After opening a case with MS and the support person convinced there was an issue with the SharePoint farm could NOT find any issues.  After a couple hours of trouble-shooting we finally ran the following "ubersrv2010-kb2825949-fullfile-x64-glb.exe PACKAGE.BYPASS.DETECTION.CHECK=1".

The update was not intuitive at all.  It just hung there with a screen stating extracting files.  This went on for 3 plus hours before it finished successfully on 4 SP2010 servers.  It went on so long the MS support person wanted to cancel out of the upgrade but it was clear the log files were being updated every few minutes so I convinced him not to cancel out.  Right now I'm not very happy with what I've seen with the update behavior.  I don't feel I should be charged for opening a case since there was never anything wrong found with the environment.

    Also, I'm on Sharepoint 2010 SP2

    Please advise,

    Tim

  14. Hi Stefan,

I'm getting the same issue as Tim. Our application server is hung. When running the bypass check above, I have already waited 2 hours and the installer still says that files are being extracted.

Any thoughts on a fix for this? Not too pleased…..and a huge annoyance factor.

    Thx,

    Jason

  15. Hi Jason,

you should NEVER use the Bypass check if not advised by Microsoft Support.

The check is there for good reason.

If you install the fix on a System using the Bypass check you are actually installing dlls on a box which do not fix to the other dlls which are from an incompatible patch Level.

E.g. you will get the Problem if you have a System on RTM trying to install a fix from Post SP2.

If you now install the fix using the Bypass Setting you have a mix of RTM and Post-SP2 dlls on the box which cannot work together.

The check verifies if all components are on a compatible patch Level and prevent installing the fix.

Please open a Support case to get your System checked as I assume you have now an incompatible mix of DLLs on a box.

    Cheers,

    Stefan

  16. Stefan,

I have the same issue with the August CU. I have installed it on one Server when I install it on the other server on the same farm it gives me the error "The expected version of the product was not found on the system" . Please help, I'm already on SP2 for both servers.

  17. Hi Sam,

this is a common error if one of the following applies:

    – SP2 has been installed for SharePoint Foundation but not for SharePoint Server

    – SP2 has not been installed for all language packs

    – SP2 for the SharePoint foundation edition of a language pack has been installed but not for the Server product

  18. Stefan,

On both servers I have installed Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 with Service Pack 2 for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 (KB2687453) 64-Bit Edition. When I browse to Central Administration > Manage Patch Status  it shows that SERVER1 has the "Hotfix for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 (KB2825949) 64-Bit Edition" installed and  SERVER2 Instal Status : Missing/Required. This is one farm with Two WFE servers LB

  19. Stefan,

I have went through the Site you provided a link for with no luck. I have ran the tool recommended on that site to check the imbalances of the updates and for the logs results, the difference between the two servers is the August CU nothing else. kindly assist on this as my farm is not balanced with the Updates.

  21. Stefan,

Thank u, I have managed to install it bypassing the version check step. I know its not a recommended procedure but hey this was giving me sleepless nights and a headache.

  22. Hi Sam,

you should have sleepless nights now: using the bypass option you potentially installed incompatible components on your farm which do not fit to the other installed components.

In worst case this can cause database inconsistencies if the database schema does not fit or exceptions.

  23. Do you know if you can install SP2 and October 2013 CU at the same time before running the upgrade(Configuration Wizard) portion?

    Reply

  24. Hi Stephen,

PSCONFIG is only required after installing the last patch. That's also true when installing a service pack and a CU.

  25. Hi Stefan. A few months ago, Microsoft published a page that tracked all of the SharePoint 2010 cumulative updates. I noticed that the page has been remove. Are you aware of another page that tracks the updates in a similar fashion? Thanks.

  26. Hi,

Our user's asked us to update sharepoint 2013 to aug 2014 cu i.e 15.0.4641.1000 , as per suggestion we have installed sp1 and july 2014 CU and then aug 2014 cu….after that we have run configuration wizard it says running 9 out of 9 task successfull, but the
version is still showing as july 2014 only i.e 15.0.4631.1000. Please suggest how we can see the desired version.

  27. Hi Rakesh,

sounds to me as if you did not install the SharePoint foundation related fixes. As listed in my blog post about August 2014 CU (the blog post here is about August 2013 CU and not August 2014 CU) you have to install the SharePoint Foundation fixes together with
    the SharePoint server fixes.

    Cheers,
    Stefan
