August 2010 Cumulative Update for SharePoint has been released

Yesterday the product group released the August 2010 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2007 and 2010 product family.

The KB articles are not yet available (as usual it will take a couple more days to get these through the required release process) but the fixes can already be downloaded.

As soon as the KB articles are live they can be found at the following locations:

  • KB 2276474 – WSS 3.0
  • KB 2276472 – MOSS 2007
  • KB 2352346 – SharePoint Foundation 2010
  • KB 2352342 – SharePoint Server 2010
  • KB 2352345 – SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server

As you see there is a separate Full Server Package for SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server which simplifies patching of this common installation.

The Full Server Packages for August 2010 CU can be downloaded here:

After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm.

  1. I'm a little confused by the Aug 2010 cumulative.  The file sizes are 35mb and 51mb respectively.  But the June 2010 cumulative file sizes are 83mb and 407mb!  This would imply to me that Aug requires June.  What am I missing?

  2. Hi Greg,

thats the benefit of the support lifecycle! As support for SP1 has ended – which means that all supported machines now have to be on SP2 – hotfix packages don't have to include the fixes between SP1 and SP2 anymore.

So the smaller files are a result of the new SP2 baseline for August CU.

    Cheers,

    Stefan

  6. Hi all,

I received a couple of comments related to installation problems for these hotfixes.

If you have problems to install one of these hotfixes, please open a support case with Microsoft Support to get them analyzed individually.

  7. If I have installed SharePoint 2010 on a new server but not run the config wizard, do I need to do that first at least once before I can apply the Aug 2010 CU? Or, can I install the Foundation and Server CU's and then run the wizard for the first time?

In the past (with MOSS 07), some updates wouldn't install unless you had created at least one web app and root site collection.

    Thanks.

  8. Hi Eric,

it is sufficient to run the wizzard once at the end after you installed all fixes.

The same applies with MOSS 2007. If you have a diffferent experience, please open a support case and report it as this is not expected.

    Cheers,

    Stefan

  11. Is this the only additional fix from the June update to the August update?

    2352452  (support.microsoft.com/…/2352452 ) Description of the SharePoint Server 2010 hotfix package (spsmui-fr-fr): August 31, 2010

There was a pretty long list in the June update, but only one seems to be listed for the August one.

    Thanks

  12. Hi Rich,

please read the KBs listed above. You will find the 2352452 is included in 2352342 and 2352345.

The packages above are "Uber" packages containing many different individual fixes.

  13. Is there a way to get a list of all the fixes?  I didn't see it listed in 2352345.  Maybe I missed it….  thanks

I did not collect the whole list as the above fixes contain all.

  16. Hi Stefan,

I've just tried to download the August 2010 SharePoint 2007 server rollup CUs and they are 'unavailable'. Same with the June 2010 ones. Any ideas of what's going on?

    Thanks for any help, Alex.

  17. Hi Alex,

you might have picked a bad time. Once a week the hotfixes are repackaged with a new password phrase. During this time the hotfix packages are unavailable. Try again later in this situation.

  18. Stefan,

We are on version 12.0.0.6504 and would like to upgrade to the latest patch set. Do you see any issues? Also, you mention the reason for the smaller packages is do to the lack of support for SP1 any more. When you say this are you referring to the SharePoint infrastructure? Or the end users OS (2000, XP, Vista, Win 7)

    Thanks!

  19. Hi sp442,

there are no known issues when upgrading from 6504 to the latest patch.

Regarding the smaller packages: I meant SharePoint SP. A hotfix has to contain all fixes from the oldest supported baseline.

If the baseline is SP1 then all fixes which have been released since SP1 have to be included in the patch.

If SP2 is the baseline, then fixes between SP1 and SP2 don't have to be included any more.

  20. Hi Stefan,

I want to install August cumulative update for WSS V3 and MOSS 2007 , but I did install the CU for April and February on that MOSS Farm. Should I install also all CUs on this order February, April, and August? Does the last one contain the previous updates?

    Reply

  21. Hi Marius,

the fixes are "cumulative" updates because they contain all previous updates. So it is always sufficient to install the latest service pack plus the latest CU.

    Cheers,

    Stefan

  22. Stefan,

Have you any idea when the October cumulative updates will be released?

My query is based on the fact that I'm hoping the MS10-072 vulnerability will be included in this release.

    Thanks

  23. Hi, Stefan, i am a little confused, i hope you can help me out to find the right answers.

Should i Install the June CU's in order to be able to install the August CU's?

I am planning to Deply Sharepoint Farm with project server, Should i install :

    # Download SharePoint Foundation 2010 August 2010 CU

    # Download SharePoint Server 2010 August 2010 CU

    # Download SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server August 2010 CU

Or Should be enough just installing

    # Download SharePoint Foundation 2010 August 2010 CU

    # Download SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server August 2010 CU

    What about The October CU?

Is it stable and safe to install? or instead itr will lead to problems, i read that it messed environments after being installed.

Thanks in advance for your time Stefan

  24. Hi Loogares,

the only fix you have to install is "SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server August 2010 CU".

Oct and Dec CU introduced some problems related to navigation on some systems which will be fixed in Feb 2011 CU which is planned to be released next week.

    Cheers,

    Stefan
