S. “Soma” Somasegar receives 2008 Asian American Engineer of the Year Award

Dr. S. “Soma” Somasegar, senior vice president of the Developer Division of Microsoft, was recently chosen as 2008 Asian American Engineer of the Year (AAEOY) by the Chinese Institute of Engineers, USA. The AAEOY awards recognize outstanding Asian Americans for their contributions in science and engineering, as well as for their impact on the community. The award will be formally presented on March 1 at a banquet in Dallas, TX. Soma joins other key awardees in the science and engineering industries including Dr. Hong-Jiang Zhang, Microsoft China R&D Group Director and Chief Technology Officer, and professionals from companies such as Lockheed Martin, The Boeing Company, and Northrop Grumman Corporation.

As senior vice president of the Developer Division, Soma leads the teams responsible for providing tools and platform technologies targeted at developers, designers and teams involved in software development. This includes all version of Visual Studio – from the Express Editions to Visual Studio Team System -- Popfly, and Expression Studio for designers. On the developer platform technologies, this includes providing a consistent programming model in the .NET Framework that spans the client, Web, servers, devices and services platform continuum via the Common Language Runtime, .NET Framework, Windows Presentation Framework, Silverlight and .NET Compact Framework. Under Soma’s leadership, Visual Studio and the .NET Framework have seen an incredible amount of momentum and adoption by developers around the world. Soma is also responsible for the Web server platform and key Microsoft Web properties, specifically Microsoft.com, MSDN and TechNet, and he also oversees the Microsoft India Development Center (IDC) in Hyderabad, India and Microsoft Canada Development Center (MCDC) in Vancouver, Canada. He was the driving force behind setting up the R&D center in India in 1998.
