OpsMgr 2007: Problems Running the Support Tools

This is an issue that still seems to get a lot of people so I wanted to send out a quick heads up in the hopes that I could maybe save you some pain and heartache down the road.  On your System Center Operations Manager 2007 CD you'll find a \Support Tools directory with a lot of cool tools in it.  The problem is that when you pull one of the EXE's and copy it to your local box it won't run.  So what's the deal?  Well, what's not so obvious is the fact that a couple of these tools have a dependency on few DLL's that may not exist on the computer you're trying to run them on.  Two in particular are:

  • Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.GatewayApprovalTool.exe
  • DBCreateWizard.exe

To get these to run you you must copy the following files from the Operations Manager 2007 installation folder to the local folder that contains the tool:

  • Microsoft.MOM.UI.Common.dll
  • Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.UI.ConsoleFramework.dll
  • Microsoft.MOM.UI.Wrappers.dll

Copy these files from an Operations Manager 2007 server that is running the same Windows version and service pack level as the destination computer.

We have a good Knowledge Base article that talks about this so if you want to read more go here.
