Making Money with Windows Apps

Can you believe 17 year old Nick D’Aloisio secured $1 million worth of investment for his simple Summly App? There’s so much money available in developing a good app.

With over a billion PCs in use, Windows represents the largest platform in the world. This unprecedented reach, combined with the fact that any PC running Windows 7 can run Windows 8, presents developers with a tremendous revenue opportunity.

The Windows Store can be used to take full advantage of this opportunity through its support of flexible business models, markets, and languages.

As you start to decide on how to make money with your apps, this blog wanted to take a few minutes to describe the options and choices the Windows Store offers.

Choose your business model

With the Windows Store, you can choose from a variety of different business models, ranging from free apps that support ads to apps that you sell at a specific price. As you start to build your apps, start thinking about which business model makes the most sense for you.

Don't worry if you aren't 100 percent sure which business model to choose—you can always use the many Windows Store reports to analyse how your app is doing, and make adjustments when necessary.

Choose your markets

Expand the reach of your apps through the hundreds of markets the Windows Store supports. If you're unfamiliar with how to get an app ready for different markets, there are some guidelines to help you.

To learn more about how to put those guidelines into practice, check out our documentation on globalising your app. The information in these sections can help you maximise your success in international markets.

Choose your languages

The hundreds of languages the Windows Store supports provides you with even greater flexibility when it comes to marketing and selling your apps. If you're unfamiliar with how to translate your app into other languages, you might want to take advantage of our Multilingual App Toolkit.

Get paid

Of course, if you're selling apps, you want to get paid. We've designed the Windows Store to help you get set up for payments in as little time as possible.

What are you waiting for? Get going.
