Welcome to the January 28 – February 3, 2018 edition of the Office 365 Weekly Digest.

Microsoft Teams is the focus of the six new entries in the Office 365 Roadmap, with additions for Stream, Cloud App Security and Advanced Threat Protection as well. Note: The feature allowing distribution list owners to upgrade their lists to Office 365 Groups has been cancelled.

Regarding upcoming events, spaces are still available for the various customer immersion experiences in February, along with the Azure Active Directory webinars.

Intelligent Communications in Office 365
15044 Distribution List owners can upgrade the DLs they own to Office 365 Groups Groups in Outlook provides more functionality than a distribution list - even new members get access to past conversations and attachments and much more. We are making it easier for users who own DLs to upgrade them to Office 365 Groups from Outlook on the web. DL owners will see eligible DLs in the left navigation pane in Outlook on the web, under the 'Groups' section and can click on them to upgrade.

What's new in Microsoft Teams – January update

New features in Microsoft Teams make it an even more powerful hub for teamwork by enabling you to use apps in new ways—including the ability to command apps and take quick actions from the command box, as well as include content from an app in a conversation. This marks the biggest single release of new functionality since Teams launched last March. This post is a summary of the main updates that we introduced in December and January, with features that allow users to: (1) communicate more effectively with new chat functionality, (2) have more effective meetings and calls, (3) collaborate more effectively, and (4) user Apps in more ways to get more done in Microsoft Teams.

Changes to Office and Windows servicing and support

Delivering a secure and productive modern workplace is a top priority for many of our commercial customers, and we're committed to help. Last July, we took a big step forward in this journey with the introduction of Microsoft 365, a new product suite that brings together Office 365, Windows 10, and Enterprise Mobility + Security.  Many customers are in the process of moving to one or more of these products, and they've asked us to clarify a few key points to help them with their upgrades.  Today – two years before the end of extended support for Windows 7 and Office 2010 (January and October 2020, respectively) – we're announcing servicing extensions for Windows 10, changes to the Office 365 ProPlus system requirements, and new details on the next perpetual release of Office and Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release of Windows.

Office 365 ProPlus delivers cloud-connected and always up-to-date versions of the Office desktop apps. To ensure that customers get the most secure and efficiently managed experience from ProPlus and Windows 10 together, we are providing updates on the Windows system requirements for Office 365 ProPlus.

  • To clarify our current support practices for ProPlus running on Windows 10, ProPlus will not be supported on Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) versions that are no longer being serviced.
  • Effective January 14, 2020, ProPlus will no longer be supported on the following versions of Windows. This will ensure that both Office and Windows receive regular, coordinated updates to provide the most secure environment with the latest capabilities.
    • Any Windows 10 LTSC release
    • Windows Server 2016 and older
    • Windows 8.1 and older

Last year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 – the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). We're pleased to share the following updates:

  • Office 2019 will ship in H2 of 2018. Previews of the new apps and servers will start shipping in the second quarter of 2018.
  • Office 2019 apps will be supported on:
    • Any supported Windows 10 SAC release
    • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2018
    • The next LTSC release of Windows Server
  • The Office 2019 client apps will be released with Click-to-Run installation technology only. We will not provide MSI as a deployment methodology for Office 2019 clients. We will continue to provide MSI for Office Server products.

 

Introducing Flow Integration in Microsoft Teams

As part of Microsoft Teams' recent apps updates, we're pleased to announce the release of the Microsoft Flow integration in Teams. With this integration, right from within Teams, you can create and manage flows, review your received and sent approvals, and launch flows with the Flow Bot. In this post, we'll walk you through these new capabilities. To get started, install the Flow app from the Teams' Store. To access the Store, click on the icon at the bottom of the left-hand navigation bar. Then, choose the Flow app from Top picks or type "Flow" in the search box. Once you've installed the app, you'll notice four tabs – Conversation, Flows, Approvals, and About. The Conversation tab enables you to interact with the FlowBot, the Flows tab allows you to create new flows and manage existing ones, and the Approvals tab lists your received and sent approval requests. Click on the Flow tab and Sign in.

 

New Apps and Services in Office 365 US Government

Microsoft delivers Office 365 secure productivity and communication services like email, document creation apps and storage, intranet sites, and instant messaging/telephony to the US Government from three environments designed to meet the unique data handling regulations for controlled unclassified information. Architected according to NIST controls, FedRAMP requirements, and the DISA Security Requirements Guidelines, these environments store content in the continental United States, are operated by US citizens, and are authorized to hold Federal, criminal justice, Federal tax, and covered defense information. Every service introduced into the US Government offerings has undergone a third party review to ensure that we meet our compliance commitments to you. We complete audits regularly to make new capabilities available as frequently as possible. Release cycles differ from Enterprise offerings for new services, but once available, the service will align with the commercial user experience. The October audit is complete, and Microsoft has received the 3PAO report, so we can confirm what will be released in the coming weeks. The current roadmap for Office 365 Government Community Cloud (GCC), Government Community Cloud (GCC) High, and DoD can be found at the end of this post.

Security baseline for Office 2016 and Office 365 ProPlus apps – DRAFT

Microsoft is pleased to announce the draft release of the recommended security configuration baseline settings for Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 and Office 365 ProPlus 2016 apps. Please evaluate this proposed baseline and send us your feedback via blog comments below. Instead of retaining the entire Office 2013 baseline and simply adding settings that were newly introduced in the Office 2016 GPOs, we have conducted a thorough review of all available configuration settings – as we did beginning with the Windows 10 baselines – including in the baseline only those settings that address contemporary security threats. In the process we removed over eight dozen settings that had been in previous baselines but that were determined not to advance security posture in a meaningful way, and added a handful of new settings. The result is a more streamlined, purposeful baseline that is easier to configure, deploy, and validate.

 

Public preview: "What If" tool for Azure AD Conditional Access policies

Azure AD Conditional Access (CA) has really taken off. Organizations around the world are using it to ensure secure, compliant access to applications. Every month, Conditional Access is now used to protect over 10K organizations and over 10M active users! It's amazing to see how quickly our customers have put it to work! We've received lot of feedback about the user impact of Conditional Access. Specifically, with this much power at your fingertips, you need a way to see how CA policies will impact a user under various sign-in conditions. We heard you, and today I am happy to announce the public preview of the "What If" tool for Conditional Access. The What If tool helps you understand the impact of the policies on a user sign-in, under conditions you specify. Rather than waiting to hear from your user about what happened, you can simply use the What If tool.
