New to Office 365 in December—extending human ingenuity with everyday AI

At an event last week in San Francisco, Harry Shum, executive vice president of Microsoft AI & Research, demonstrated how Microsoft is infusing intelligent technologies across our core products to make artificial intelligence (AI) available to everyone, with the simple goal of helping people deliver their best work. Office 365 is built on Microsoft's powerful platform for AI that makes advancements in machine learning and AI accessible to every developer and organization. From document translation to intelligent threat detection, AI is already enhancing the productivity experience of over 120 million commercial Office 365 users. New Office 365 AI capabilities this month help subscribers discover insights from data, leverage organizational knowledge, arrive on time for events, and more.

Intelligent Communications takes the next step with calling in Teams

In September, we introduced a new vision for intelligent communications including plans to evolve Microsoft Teams into the primary client for calling and meetings in Office 365. As part of this, we are bringing comprehensive calling and meetings capabilities into Microsoft Teams, along with data and insights from the Microsoft Graph, and a strong roadmap of innovation to empower teams to achieve more. We are releasing new calling capabilities in Teams, providing full featured dialing capabilities, complete with call history, hold/resume, speed dial, transfer, forwarding, caller ID masking, extension dialing, multi-call handling, simultaneous ringing, voicemail, and text telephone (TTY) support. With the addition of calling, Teams is an even more robust hub for teamwork -- the single place for your content, contacts and communications including chat, meetings and calling in a modern, collaboration experience.

Sharing Links will open in Modern Previewers

Earlier this year, we announced support for over 250 file types in OneDrive and SharePoint (with our recent additions Zip viewer, we're now up to over 270 types)! Our customers have been using these viewers millions of times a day, and they've asked us to help with a common scenario: when a user shares a file out, the recipient still needed a PC application to open those files. We're announcing that newly created Sharing Links will take advantage of our previewers. This update will roll out in the following weeks, completing by the end of January. Users will not need to do anything for this change to take effect.

Search for words in your images in Office 365

Earlier this year, we rolled out automatic detection of images that are uploaded to SharePoint and OneDrive. This intelligence identifies whether an image is a whiteboard, a receipt, outdoors, a business card, an X-ray and many other types. You can then search for 'whiteboard' and you'll see all the whiteboard photos you've captured and uploaded. Now, as we announced at Ignite, any printed words in an image are automatically detected, extracted and made searchable. Using computer vision technology, when you upload the image, the location data (if available) from a photograph (such as Oslo, Norway), and the identification and extraction of text will happen automatically and become searchable. You can search in SharePoint, OneDrive or to find your captures.

Measuring And Driving Usage Of Teams For Education

This post shares how schools can track the usage of Teams for Education and a good starting point is to review this blog post here (if you’re still in the planning and setup phase of Teams, read this guide first). With the announcement earlier this year that Microsoft Classroom Preview was going to discontinue and be replaced by Teams for Education, schools all across the globe have been implementing or preparing to deploy Teams. As with any new tool, training and support for teachers and students is important and being able to measure the impact of the uptake of a tool is critical for school leaders to see if they’re achieving the Return On Investment (ROI) both of the platform itself, and the cost of training.

Flow of the Week: Automating Intelligent Customer Service using Microsoft Flow, and Dynamics 365

As organizations focus on customer obsession, they need to scale their organization to exceed elevated customer expectations. It typically isn't practical to meet this demand through additional headcount. The question becomes how can I scale my customer service department, without adding labor costs? The answer lies in the phrase "work smarter, not harder". To achieve our new customer service goals, we can leverage Microsoft services like Microsoft Flow, and Dynamics 365. A strategy we want employ is to better understand the types of issues our customers are having as soon as possible. If we can interpret their intent, we can ensure the correct people within our organization are aware of the issue, to provide a more timely outcome. But, to achieve this, we need some intelligent technology. Fortunately, we can take advantage of which will understand the customer's intent so we can route this information correctly.

Protecting Email on Any iOS/Android Device

As organizations are moving their mail to the cloud, we have heard from our customers that they want to easily protect their Exchange Online data on mobile devices. One of the most exciting features of Intune is the ability to protect your corporate data even on mobile devices that aren't enrolled in an MDM. With Intune App Protection (aka "Intune MAM"), we can give employees secure access to corporate data with minimal end user effort. The best part of all? Setting up and deploying MAM can be completed in a matter of hours (and that's with testing)! This post covers the basics of Intune app protection, how to get it configured for Outlook, and (most importantly) how to successfully deploy it to your organization.

Another update: Call Queues and Auto Attendant training

After updating the training last week with the feature updates from October and November, here is another update with the new capabilities from December. The recommendation remains the same as previously: if you are new to Call Queues and Auto Attendant or need a refresher, we recommend watching the training recorded by Senior Program Manager Korneel Bullens. | Related:
