Office 365 Weekly Digest | November 5 – 11, 2017

Welcome to the November 5 - 11, 2017 edition of the Office 365 Weekly Digest.

There were significantly more updates to the Office 365 Roadmap last week, with nineteen new entries. Most of them are specific to "GCC High and DoD" environments, that deliver compliance with Department of Defense Security Requirements Guidelines, Defense Federal Acquisition Regulations Supplement (DFARS), and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). There are also new entries for the Office 365 Admin Center, Office 365 Groups and Yammer.

The customer immersion experiences seem to be well-received as most have only a few available sessions remaining in November, and others with no availability until December.

The first post in a new blog series focused on successful adoption kicks off the Blog Roundup, with additional posts for the new Resume Assistant in Word (powered by LinkedIn), updates for Flow and a post-Ignite review and look at the roadmap for Planner. Also included are updates on Collaboration Space Permissions in Teams for EDU OneNote Class Notebooks, and a post reviewing the Microsoft recommended approach for getting the best connectivity and performance in Office 365.

Wrapping up this week's post are the November 2017 Office 365 Update video, a Microsoft IT Showcase video on Advanced Threat Protection, new features in SharePoint list and library preview web parts, and a visual refresh for Sway.com.

Welcome to our blog series about the four success factors for driving Microsoft 365 adoption. In this series, we will share insights from our most successful customers, Microsoft and 3rd party research, and proven best practices, about how to be successful with Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 can help employees in your organization do their best work. But, to realize this impact for your organization it's important to go beyond the technical onboarding and help your end users adopt Microsoft 365. A common question from IT is 'How?'. From the 40,000+ customers we've helped move to the Microsoft cloud with our customer success service FastTrack, we've learned this resistance can be overcome with a focus on four success factors: Stakeholders, Scenarios, Awareness, and Training. | Resource: Microsoft 365 End User Adoption Guide

Bringing AI to job seekers with Resume Assistant in Word, powered by LinkedIn

Last week at LinkedIn's headquarters in San Francisco, we announced Resume Assistant, a new feature in Microsoft Word to help Office 365 subscribers craft compelling resumes with personalized insights powered by LinkedIn. With over 80 percent of resumes updated in Word, Resume Assistant helps job seekers showcase accomplishments, be more easily discovered by recruiters, and find their ideal job. The workplace is changing, impacting not only how people work, but also the frequency with which they change roles, introducing new challenges for job seekers. Nearly 70 percent of people say they have difficulty portraying their work experience effectively, and 50 percent struggle to tailor their resume to a specific job opportunity. Furthermore, job applications on LinkedIn have increased 40 percent year-over-year, signaling increased competition for jobs. Resume Assistant in Microsoft Word begins rolling out this week to Office 365 subscribers that are enrolled in the Office Insiders program on Windows Desktop using English display language. It will be available first in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, New Zealand, United, Kingdom, and United States of America. It will be generally available on more platforms and markets over the coming months. | Resource: Microsoft Mechanics - Office 365 LinkedIn integration - modern profile cards and resume assistant

Collaboration Space Permissions in Teams for EDU OneNote Class Notebooks

Since releasing Collaboration Space permissions for OneNote Class Notebooks in April of 2017 we've had many requests to enable these same capabilities for Class Notebooks created in Microsoft Teams for Education. While we are still working to bring these experiences directly into Teams Settings, we have now rolled out the near-term ability to enable both of these capabilities through the stand-alone OneNote Class Notebook app, which will allow Teachers to still experience all of the same capabilities for Class Notebooks inside of Teams. We anticipate bringing these experiences natively into the Teams for EDU settings sometime in early 2018. Here are the steps to get started today!

Getting the best connectivity and performance in Office 365

As enterprise adoption and reliance on SaaS apps like Office 365 continues to grow, and as employees work from more varied locations, the old methods of backhauling traffic to a central location for inspection creates latency and leads to a poor end user experience. The shift from accessing enterprise applications in a customer operated central datacenter to Office 365, and the differences in traffic patterns, performance requirements, and endpoint security needs to be acknowledged and planned differently when compared with simple Internet communications and web browsing research connectivity. Microsoft recommends using the Internet and a simple network design for optimal connectivity and performance in Office 365. A key goal in the network design should be reducing the round-trip time (RTT) from your network into the Microsoft global network and ensure that the network traffic is not hair pinned or centralized to specific locations. Use the Office 365 connectivity principles outlined in this post to manage your traffic and get the best performance when connecting to Office 365.

New features for SharePoint list and library preview web parts

Earlier in 2017 we introduced preview versions of new web parts to allow you to integrate views of a SharePoint list or library on SharePoint pages. Our initial rollout was limited to "read-only" mode, meaning you could embed custom views of the list or library with limited interactivity. We're introducing related command bar items that allow you to create new items and upload documents directly from within the web part. We are also introducing item renaming, deletion, and downloading in the web part. Please note, this functionality has been always available in the native views of lists and libraries. This announcement extends those capabilities to the web part experience. We expect to start the rollout of this feature around November 14, 2017. Please continue to watch the TechCommunity for the latest rollout news.

Starting today, Sway on the web and Sway for the Windows 10 app has a simplified interface with all the same features you already know and enjoy. While Sway has changed visually, functionally it is the same. To make it easier to create and preview your Sway content, we replaced Storyline and Preview with two new tabs called Storyline and Design.
