Family learning, full STEAM ahead

Parent’s Day was yesterday, and we’re reflecting on the critical role parents play in the success of their children and, in turn, our community. A recent report featured in Education Week evaluated parent involvement in their children’s education over the past decade. The benefits of parent involvement in the educational process are inspiring – according to the study, regardless of family income or background, "students with involved parents are more likely to:

  • earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs;
  • be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits;
  • attend school regularly;
  • have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school; and
  • graduate and go on to postsecondary education."

For years Microsoft has championed The Tech Museum’s Family Math & Engineering Program, aimed at teaching families skills needed to succeed in STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). There are a lot of great local STEAM programs, but what’s exceptional about this one is that it provides a framework for parents to learn alongside their children.

Every Saturday, for six weeks, families get hands-on with math, while developing logical thinking, spatial reasoning and creative problem solving. Since 2008, the program has helped hundreds of families. Check out this video for a glimpse at how it empowered Sarah and her family.
