Clarissa first began visiting the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula (BGCP) at the age of six because she knew what she didn’t want: a life ruled by her neighborhood’s gang culture. Over the next several years, after Clarissa had completed 200 hours at the center, the Club offered her a job working with other children on computers to improve reading and math skills.

Ultimately, Clarissa came to understand what she did want out of life, with the help of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula. Guiding her through the college application process, BGCP provided Clarissa with the tools and emotional support to become the first person in her family to attend a four-year college. Today, Clarissa is excited about her future as a journalist and plans to use this career to inform the public about alternatives to street life.
