One of the great things about SharePoint, is that it logs everything it does through the ULS (Unified Logging Service). Those logs are handy if you are troubleshooting your SharePoint installation or environment. So where are the logs? On your server, the logs are located at
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\LOGS.
I don't know about you - but way too much information for me! Also, the logs are a pain to search through and are no help at all if you don't have access to the server. There's a great feature out on CodePlex called Log Viewer: http://www.codeplex.com/features. It allows you to view the logs through Central Admin. The download is here (2nd from top): http://www.codeplex.com/features/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=2502
side note: you can change the way logging is handled in SharePoint from Central Admin: Central Administration > Operations > Diagnostics Logging
