Q: Why is the maximum memory different for Windows Server 2008 R2 depending on whether the Hyper-V role is enabled or not?

A: System availability. Servers with 512 GB, 1 TB or more don’t just grow on trees. J Thus, Hyper-V has a supported limit of 1 TB.

A:  Keep in mind that whether it’s the maximum amount of memory supported or number of processors supported, scalability is an ongoing development activity at Microsoft.
