Password reset

I was setting up my Response Point system for a demo this morning and, ouch! discovered that the previous person had changed the default Administrator password.  What can I do?  And how, in general, does a small business owner deal with a forgotten password?  Small Businesses don't have time for a fancy IT staff, and they can't afford to spend hours on hold with the manufacturer to learn how to reset the system.

Turns out it's very simple.  The Response Point installation CD-ROM contains a utilities folder, inside which are a few great utilities including a handy one called "ResponsePointPasswordReset.exe".   Copy that file to a USB key and pop it into one of the USB ports on the back of the base unit.  This immediately sets the password to the default.

This is a classic ease-of-use scenario that the Response Point team spends time thinking about.  We know that a small business owner needs a secure system, one that won't be easily accessed by a Bad Guy.  But we also know it's a hassle to contact your supplier or other expert whenever you want to make a simple change.  This USB solution requires physical access to the device -- an important form of security right off the bat -- and it's simple to administer.  No data is lost on the device, including the event logs -- like the fact that, oh, somebody was trying to access the device without the correct password.

Like we say, easy to manage.
