SBS 2003 - Configuring RPC over HTTP

  1. Start by running the Internet connection Wizard from the SBS server management console. During the wizard you will be asked to provide information regarding your preferred Internet connection setup (Router/Dial-up, Single adapter or more, ISP DNS IP addresses, certificate configuration, Exchange configuration and firewall setup).

    In the certificate page of the wizard, you should either provide a 3rd party issued certificate, or have SBS create one for you. If you would like SBS to create the certificate, you should provide the common name for the certificate. Make sure you specify the name you registered in the publicly available DNS service, or another name that can be resolved to the IP address you were assigned by your ISP.

    If you got a static IP address from your ISP but not a registered domain name, you should still provide a common name to the certificate, you will later need to overcome the name resolution issue by creating a hosts file on the client computer to translate the specified common name to the ISP IP address.

    Finish the wizard.

  2. Setting up the client computer.
    After running the wizard, your IIS server will be set up correctly to provide the OWA, SharePoint, Remote Web Workspace and RPC Proxy services.

    Connect to your server using https://servername/remote to access the "Remote Workspace web site". Log on to the site using the administrator account, and locate the "Additional Links" box on the right side of the web site. A Link named "Configure Outlook via the Internet" should be available. The link provides the required additional steps for the Outlook client configuration. If for some reason the link specified is not shown, you will need to edit the registry in order to make it available.

    Open Regedit (on the server)
    Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\RemoteUserPortal\AdminLinks
    On the right pane you will notice many DWORD values. Locate the value names "RPC". Click this value and change the value data to 1 . Refresh the Remote Web Workspace, and the link should appear.
    Since all information was entered correctly during running the Internet and Email Wizard, the naming information provided in the "Configure Outlook via the Internet" help should match the exact settings you should provide within your Outlook 2003 client configuration, it's as simple as following a recipe.
