Microsoft Announces Charity Fashion Show Geek 2 Chic: LA Benefiting The Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship

Today, I'm in southern California preparing for the latest installment of Microsoft Public Sector's charity fashion show in partnership with Bloomingdale's called "Geek 2 Chic." This event is Geek 2 Chic: Los Angeles and its happening on May 10th at Bloomingdale's Santa Monica. I am the executive producer of this event series, which is a collaboration between my DC-based Office of Civic Innovation and Microsoft's Citizenship and Public Affairs group.

Geek 2 Chic: LA features fashions from The Men's Store of Bloomingdale's on amateur models I curate from the technology and innovation community. This year, LA-based models include Ryan Scott, CEO of corporate social responsibility platform CauseCast, Alan Silberberg, founder of open government conference Gov 2.0 LA, and Eric Kuhn, the "original social media agent" at United Talent Artists (UTA). The emcee for the event is Shira Lazar, host and executive producer of What's Trending, and long-time geek in the LA community.

All proceeds from Geek 2 Chic: LA ticket sales,in addition to 10% of Bloomingdale's receipts from attendees that evening,go directly to the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a longtime partner of Microsoft. NFTE's mission is to provide programs that inspire young people from low-income communities to stay in school, to recognize business opportunities, and to plan for successful futures -- topics central to current discussions about the future of education, domestic job creation, the U.S. economy, and maintaining innovation and global competitiveness. One of the models in the show will be a NFTE graduate who launched his own business while in high school.

Last fall, we held Geek 2 Chic events benefiting NFTE in Washington, DC and Chicago, which are also vibrant entrepreneurial and technology communities. Differences in this year's Los Angeles show include a special VIP pre-reception with the models, and summer fashions (vs. winter) featured in the show.
