Trying to decide which sessions to attend at the 2013 Microsoft Management Summit?  There are a lot of great options this year, and here are ten reasons we think you should check out the sessions hosted by the authors of the Building Clouds blog…

  1. You’ll get to learn all about the Fundamentals of Building Clouds from this blog’s very own Charles Joy, Carmen Crincoli, Kath McBride, and Shawn Gibbs! This session will cover everything from building a robust cloud platform to diagnosing performance. In this session you’ll be introduced to self-service, automation, and monitoring as the foundations of a cloud management solution – and the authors will teach you how to use Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012 SP1 to create a fabric, build and deploy a service, and provide maintenance and monitoring service. Lucky for you there will be chairs at this session – because you are going to need to sit down for this.
  2. Anyone like free stuff?!? This is a serious question, because, if you visit the Cloud and Datacenter Deployment Booth (it’s Pod #16 for those of you filling out your dance card) in the Microsoft Pavilion, you can win some great prizes and enter to win a couple hot giveaways!  While you’re there (and this is probably more important than the free stuff) you can have in-depth discussions of just about any length with the authors of this blog!  You can talk about stuff like rapid deployment of the Private Cloud management stack, VMWare migration tools, disaster recovery and planning, self-service IT, and deploying and servicing applications.
  3. Are you new to System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager or App Controller? Are you familiar with it but looking to take your current skills to that oft-discussed “next level?” Would you like to actually see these tools in action, deploying hybrid cloud services effortlessly? In this session, hosted, in part, by blog author Anders Ravnholt, you’ll get in depth on Virtual Machine Manager and learn how (using your datacenter fabric) you can easily build clouds and assign resources. This session will then expand its focus to examine how App Controller manages and connects private, hosted, and public clouds.  If this isn’t enough you can also watch App Controller deploy services to the hybrid cloud, and see App Controller deliver self-service and automation opportunities.  Brace yourselves.
  4. Have you ever wanted to learn how to use Visual Studio and System Center TOGETHER? Then consider your ticket punched to come see a session dedicated to this precise topic, presented, in part, by blog author Shawn Gibbs. In this session you will learn how Visual Studio 2012 with System Center 2012 SP1- Operations Manager gives developers and operations the tools to work seamlessly together.
  5. Do you have a strong opinion about getting free drinks? Is that opinion positive? Would you like some free drinks? Too many rhetorical questions? Sessions hosted by Building Clouds blog authors will feature Mandalay Bay drink tickets and Starbucks gift cards.
  6. Are you interested in Hyper-V Replica Failover options?  Have you wondered what options exist within System Center 2012 SP1 for orchestrating Hyper-V Replica?  This session, hosted by blog authors Charles Joy and ‘Migration Mark’ Gosson, will review and demonstrate the most popular example solutions, many of which are designed and built with leveraging requirements gained directly from customers during PoCs and demonstrations. In this session you’ll get to learn more about the available solutions that leverage System Center 2012 SP1, Windows Server Hyper–V, and even Windows Azure.
  7. Think you know everything there is about Orchestrating Windows Azure and System Center 2012?  Follow up question:  How prepared are you to have your mind blown?  In this session, hosted by blog author Charles Joy (making his third session appearance at MMS 2013!), you’ll get to see live demonstrations of the Azure Integration Pack and witness for yourself that it’s much more than just app deployments.  Also featured are Cloud Service and Virtual Machine Deployments from an on–premise Orchestrator, as well as on-premise management and orchestration of public cloud targets.
  8. Let’s not forget about Deployment!  The PowerShell Deployment Toolkit is a community-supported set of knowledge and automation that enables deployment of distributed infrastructure from simple lab environments through complex highly available production environments. In this breakout session, hosted by blog author Rob Willis, you’ll learn about the architecture and inner workings of the toolkit, and get to know how it can be used to deploy a full production System Center 2012 SP1 environment in under 2 hours.
  9. VMware Migration is another hot topic, and you can look forward to a great session all about it!  Presented, in-part, by ‘Migration Mark’ Gosson, this session will examine the tools and programs available to help customers transform their datacenters and migrate from VMware to Hyper-V.  This session will also feature Microsoft partner Fyrsoft – who delivered the largest VMware to Hyper-V migration in 2012.  Fyrsoft will discuss their experiences, challenges, and the common pitfalls to avoid.  A must see!
  10.
