My name is Peter Gallagher and I am a Support Engineer on the Small Business Server support team here at Microsoft. I work at the Las Colinas campus in North Texas (very close to DFW airport). I am new to the blogging world and thought it would be both cool and beneficial to the community to post some of the technical issues I deal with and their soultions (hopefully). My tentative plan is to post about once per day.
For example, today I worked on an issue where the customer could not send mail to some domains (about 3 or 4 that we knew of). Generally speaking, this is a typical "blacklist" type of issue and the solution is to use a smarthost. Well, I was wrong. Looking at the SMTP logs, it appeared that it would hang at "send binary data" and the session would timeout. It appeared that something between this particular SBS box and the receiving server was not allowing the "EHLO" command set through. The solution was to set the Small Business SMTP Connector to use HELO rather than EHLO. We stopped and started the Default SMTP Virtual Server and zooooom....mail started flowing. We checked the SMTP logs again to verify we were using HELO instead of EHLO, which we were.
On a side note, we did the 2nd episode of the "Inside SBS" podcast this morning. We actually opened it up for incoming calls. The results are in...we had a whopping TWO caller turnout! It was productive though as we had some email questions. For more info, check http://blogs.technet.com/sbs.
