How often do you use one device while in arm’s reach of another? All the time, right? You’re in the middle of a web search on your tablet when you need to check a new email on your iPhone, or you’re texting on your Windows Phone while also working away on your PC.
Here’s a concept: what if your favorite device in the office doubled as a next-generation remote control in your living room? Wouldn’t that be cool? If you said yes, check out Xbox SmartGlass, a free app that connects your Xbox 360 to the devices you already own to enhance your gaming and entertainment experiences across screens.
SmartGlass lets your mobile phone or tablet interact with your Xbox 360, allowing you to pause and rewind movies, start your favorite playlist, surf the Web on your TV, and use your device’s keyboard for easy text input and search. The app automatically delivers extended experiences, like behind-the scenes commentary for shows and real-time gaming strategies.
In addition to Windows 8 tablets and PCs, last Friday’s Xbox SmartGlass release added support for Windows Phone 7.5 and 7.8, as well as Android smartphones on 4.x, extending the reach of Xbox entertainment from more than 70 million consoles to hundreds of millions of devices worldwide. Xbox SmartGlass will become available on Windows Phone 8 when it ships and on Apple iOS devices soon.
Last week Xbox also broadened its global reach, expanding Xbox entertainment experiences to 222 countries from 35, as part of Xbox’s evolution from gaming console to a premium entertainment service, which now includes Xbox Music, Xbox Video, and Xbox Games.
For more on these new entertainment experiences from Xbox, see the complete blog post by Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Division and let us know in the comments how you’re planning to use SmartGlass.
